Five days ago, the 45th president of the United States of America was elected. Donald Trump, a man that had been scorned and laughed at for the past year, successfully won the close election mainly between Secretary Hillary Clinton and him. His success was joy for seemingly few and a major disappointment for what seemed like most of America. Never before has the president-elect of the United States received such hatred in such a short period of time. It shows just how America has changed.
Not even 48 hours after the 2016 Presidential Election, protests against Donald Trump started. Action against the new president was taken, including protests and rallies in big cities (Los Angeles, Chicago, to name a few.) I've seen many instances of college professors giving their students time to "cope" with the election. I have seen videos of Americans burning the beautiful, glorious, American flag in protest. I have seen tweets and posts, including the #NotMyPresident. This disgusts me. I am revolted, astonished, shocked by the fact that us, us Americans, can do something like this. Such violence, all because of one man. Even if you do so, what can you change? Will violence change those votes that elected him? Never has an election impacted America this way. This election was no different then any other, so why did it cause such an uproar?
I am neither a supporter of Trump, nor a hater. I am simply accepting the facts and the reality that is now before me. America, Trump has been elected to become our next president. It baffles me how uneducated some people can be, stating that a tyrant has appeared, and that he will ruin this country. What proof do you have of such things? Has he even done anything as the 45th president to ruin this country? It is ironic that all throughout our life, we are constantly told to "not judge a book by its cover." Yet, is that what we are doing right now? Why are we judging a man that has yet to prove himself to us?
This election has divided America in more ways then one. The United States of America has become a nation that is conflicted, a nation with cracks running through that get deeper and deeper by the day. Why did we allow this to happen? I understand that every election has its conflicts with citizens choosing one party or the other. But there has not been a single election that has had such a response after the election is over.
I don't care if you banter and insult the candidates during the election, but I do if you do it after. Now, you are not only insulting our next president but the people of America. You are insulting their views, their ideals, and their freedom of choice. Perhaps you remember the prediction polls that stated that Hillary Clinton would win, yet all of a sudden, Donald Trump is our next president. People are afraid to voice their opinions because they will be shut down and slandered with insults. You are saying that this is a mistake, that this man, Donald Trump, is not your president. You are defacing and disgracing the United States. I understand if you want to express your emotions, but that is no reason to the burn the flag of America. This is my response to those protesters, to those people who deem it necessary to tarnish our nation's symbol.
Why are you burning the flag? As the beginning of a revolution? To watch America, YOUR country, go up in flames? Do you want it to go up in flames? Is that your wish? To destroy this breaking country, to stomp it on the ground, to burn it until nothing but ash is left? Is that what you want? Because let me tell you something...You are not only making a fool of yourselves, but a fool of this country. Other countries are watching, watching as we destroy our own country over an election. And believe me, they are secretly laughing. Perhaps we have different views, but I accept that. I want this country to flourish, to live and thrive, to become better, to become greater.
I have not held positive views against Donald Trump this entire election, but I am willing to change them if he proves me wrong. I will wait and see. I will watch and observe. If Donald Trump is ready to improve America, then I am ready to accept and support this man.
America, it is time you wake up from your dream and face reality. It is time to move on, to gather yourself. In this time of need, what we need is healing, unity, not division. We are the United States of America, and we need to be one. Instead of protesting, bear hope for the future.
I hope that soon we will finally realize that what we should be doing right now is not complaining but working together to unite us. Violence is not the answer. Violence will not solve anything. It will only burn this country.
