I never liked watching sports.
The idea of observing grown men sweat on a field or court never entertained me. However, in middle school watching sports became a trend. Who needed to watch the new episode of iCarly if the Knicks game was on? (....I did.) So, I was forced to sit through long debates at the lunch table over which team was better, and expected to know the significance of Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant...Lets just say part of me still doesn't know who they are.
However, coming to Villanova really changed that for me. I would be at games screaming my head off, yelling the names of the players out loud as if I had known them forever. I wanted to be at every game and sit as close as possible, and this wasn't just so I could get a better look at Donte Divincenzo. With March Madness upon us, I have become every more excited. Villanovans are gathering nation wide to support the one team we all love. Posters are being hung everywhere, dancing riots are breaking out in the Quad, and Jerseys are being worn 24/7.
I genuinely like basketball.
So what happened? Did I take interest in it because I was forced to? Did I do it to fit in? No, I started liking basketball because it is the epitome of Villanova. The amount of enthusiasm and heart that is shown at a basketball game is unmatched by every other school. A bunch of excited kids are packed into an arena, all screaming for the same team....what could be better? Sure, you can experience school spirit on campus, but nothing will ever compare to walking into an arena wearing your crisp blue and white jersey while singing "V FOR VILLANOVA...V FOR VICTORY..."
