Last Sunday, the United States Womenās National Team clutched the World Cup title, and all of America watched proudly. This victory gratified the citizens of the United States, but for the female soccer players of America, it proved something.
It proved that womenās soccer is actually interesting to watch, contrary to popular belief. Amy Poehler delightfully made this clear when re-uniting with Seth Myers for the segment āReally?!ā on Late Night with Seth Myers. The fabulous Amy Poehler condemned Sports Illustrated writer Andy Benoit after he tweeted that all womenās sports are not worth watchingā¦really?!
It proved that women can be extremely aggressive when it comes to sports, especially soccer. These women are facing each other head on, protected only by pads on their shins.
It proved that pretty girls have more talents than just standing around and looking nice. Alex Morgan and Julie Johnston seem to be known as the āhotā girls on the team, according to the guys on my Twitter feed, but these girls are definitely more than just pretty faces.
In this World Cup, Alex Morgan scored a great goal against Colombia to secure the United States a 2-0 lead. Not to mention all the opportunities she provided in helping her teammates score as well in this tournament. Plus, she has scored a stunning total of 52 goals as a United States National Player, 10th most in USWNT history (and sheās still going).
Julie Johnston doesnāt just stand in the back and twirl her pretty blonde hair; she has been a safety net for the team all tournament. Oh, and fun fact: the Womenās National Team has not lost a game since she has joined the roster.
I am proud to be an American and I am proud to say that I was able to play the great sport of soccer in this amazing country.
