The 2016 Summer Olympic Games begin on Friday, August 5. This year there will be 34 different events throughout the 17 days of the games. At the 2014 London Olympics the United States placed first overall with a total of 104 medals. Bringing home seven of the 46 gold medals was the U.S. women’s gymnastics team. Winning a team gold medal, two individual gold medals, one individual silver medal, and one individual bronze medal the women’s U.S. gymnastics team has a lot to live up to this year in Rio. Let’s look at who makes up this year’s Olympics gymnastic team.
1. Simone Biles
Simone Biles, 19, is a back to back to back world champion. She won three consecutive first place medals at the last three women’s world championships. Since the summer of 2013, this amazing young athlete has not lost an all around competition. With this many medals and this much talent, Biles is expected to win multiple gold medals.
2. Madison Kocian
Madison Kocian, 19, is the 2015 world champion on the uneven bars. Kocian has competed with the U.S team at worlds twice. Her extreme upper body strength and consistency on the floor awarded her a spot on the 2016 Olympic team. Kocian is supposed to be one of the best on the uneven bars and will get a chance to show what she’s got in Rio this month.
3. Laurie Hernandez
Laurie Hernandez, 16, a new crowd favorite is straight out of the junior division. Young Hernandez was undefeated in 2015 in the junior division and was able to make it up to senior ranks for the Olympic trials. At the trials, Hernandez placed second overall which insured her seat to Rio.
4. Gabby Douglas
Gabby Douglas, 20, is a returning Olympic gold medalist. In London 2012, Douglas won an individual all-around gold medal and a team gold medal with the Fierce Five. Douglas made history being the first African American to ever win an individual all-around gold medal. Even though Douglas fell during her beam routine both days during the Olympic trials, she managed to secure her spot on the Olympic team due to her outstanding uneven bars routine and her consistency on floor and vault.
5. Aly Raisman
Aly Raisman, 22, is a three-time Olympic medalist and will be the oldest on the team this year. Raisman will lead the U.S. women’s team to Rio as captain. She was also captain of the 2012 team in London and won the most medals on the U.S team. During Olympic trials she earned the second-highest beam score and will hopefully continue to wow the judges with her outstanding beam routines.
These five women will start competing August 7 in Rio. Alongside of these five amazing athletes with be three alternates Ashton Locklear, MyKayla Skinner, and Ragan Smith. With last year’s golden reputation the U.S. women’s Olympic gymnastics team has much to live up to this month. If these young athletes perform at their full potential the U.S should come home with more gold metals then they won in 2012. Watch their journey in Rio on NBS throughout August!
