The University of Cincinnati is home to 10 amazing and well-rounded sororities. Each week a chapter from UC will be highlighted along with their accomplishments, valuable women and sisterhood they have achieved as a whole.
The Ohio Kappa chapter of Pi Beta Phi was installed at the University of Cincinnati on Jan. 23, 2010. They were the first new sorority the campus had seen in 75 years! They are represented by the colors wine and silver blue. They are symbolized by a wine carnation, an arrow and an angel. Their official badge, the golden arrow, has 12 links beneath it. Each link represents one of the founding members.
Pi Beta Phi's national philanthropy is Read > Lead > Achieve, which they support through various philanthropic events throughout the year. Each week, Ohio Kappa sends women for weekly tutoring with the Academy of World Languages in Cincinnati to help second graders with their homework and to serve as mentors to the kids. They also team up with Sigma Chi fraternity for weekly tutoring through Inner City Youth Opportunities. According to Rachel Ribaudo, Vice President of Communications for Ohio Kappa, they host "Angels in the Outfield" in the fall.
"We pair with the UC baseball team and invite all the different chapters on campus to compete with one another in a wiffle ball tournament at UC's own Marge Schott Baseball Stadium," Ribaudo says. Ohio Kappa was able to raise more than $2,000 at this event.
In the spring, they host their annual "Pie a Pi Phi" fundraiser, which can be recognized with campuses all over the country. This event is where they set up a booth on campus during the day and sell pies to students at UC who will then go and pie a Pi Phi in the face.
Aside from their well-known philanthropic events, Ohio Kappa hosted its first "Noodles for Knowledge" event this past semester, where teams from various campus organizations were served a pasta dinner and played trivia put on by a professional trivia host. Ribaudo also says Ohio Kappa participates in Fraternity Day of Service, where the entire chapter volunteers at Cincinnati Children's Museum, where they provide crafts and fun activities revolving around literacy.
With an emphasis on philanthropic service, Pi Phi leads by the values of "integrity, lifelong commitment, honor and respect, personal and intellectual growth, philanthropic service to others and sincere friendship."
Ribaudo explains that, this past year especially, "Ohio Kappa has made quite a number of accomplishments."
Senior Stephanie Gerard, was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award by Order of Omega and freshman Haley Deckman, was awarded a scholarship by Rho Lambda honorary society.
"Our chapter was presented with four achievements at the 2016 Greek Excellence Awards: Overall Premier Chapter Runner-Up, Most Improved Chapter, Excellence in Social Responsibility and Excellence in Member Development," Ribaudo says.
Ribaudo also goes on to explain that academics always come first within Ohio Kappa.
"We are students first and sorority women second." Ribaudo says that their executive board stresses this idea to the women within Ohio Kappa and awards women with a pearl to attach to their golden arrow badge if they receive a 3.75 or higher. They also invite women to an academic brunch if they made Dean's List the past semester. Ribaudo stresses that being an Ohio Kappa allows her to expand her professional network, which "presents countless job opportunities as well as resources for any professional or academic guidance that you may need throughout and after your college career."
Ohio Kappa women are most certainly world travelers. They have had countless members travel to places, such as Guatemala, Nicaragua, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Prague, South Africa, Switzerland, Iceland, China, New York City, Dallas, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta and more for co-ops, study abroad or mission trips.
Ribaudo ends on the note that "We are a chapter of 150 women strong, and are truly growing as whole and within each member each and every day."
