This past weekend I finally got to watch UFC 200, as I have been anticipating this event for so long. Being around all of my friends and being able to watch it live had me pumped, I'm not going to lie. There were some great pre-lims and some great main card fights. Of course I had my disappointments in results, but I can say that it was still a well-rounded card overall.
Prelims
For the prelims I was pretty excited and watched them all with my friends.
Overall, I thought they were really well rounded and I thoroughly enjoyed the majority of them! The Sanchez vs Lauzon fight was definitely one of my favorites for sure. I mean seeing Lauzon on a prelim was a little weird, but you can't have them all on the main card! Having Louzon win was definitely a highlight of my night.
With the next set of prelims were also really good. Can we also talk about how Johny Hendricks shaved his beard and looks ten times different? But anyways, all of these fights were really entertaining in my opinion. We have so many first round finishers I was even more shocked by. You can see by the results above that we have some interesting winners (in my opinion, it was great), like Juliana Pena and Kelvin Gastelum. Both fights determined by decision were something to talk about for sure.
Main Card
Of course we cannot surpass the main card. The most anticipated UFC event ever. A lot of people (my friends as well), after watching the fights have said they were a little underwhelming from all the hype they got. I agree and disagree at the same time with a few of their opinions.
First, The Cain Velasquez and Travis Browne fight was no surprise to me. Not only do I like Velasquez, but I am not the biggest Travis Browne fan, at all. So when Cain won I wasn't disappointed at all. WIth the Jose Aldo vs Frankie Edgar however, I was a tad bit sad. I do like both fighters, they do great work in mma, but I was really hoping for Edgar to pull it off. But Aldo looked great; he was fit and definitely prepared for this fight.
Next was what was supposed to be the main event, but as many know now, Jon Jones was kicked off the card due to testing positive for substance. This is so disappointing in so many ways to the fans, and even more so Daniel Cormier. There was a video taken of Dana White telling Cormier the news.
In the video Cormier is visibly upset and even says "I'll sign a release and we can just fight." Of course this was a no, but all of his hard work for this event was crushed and that is devastating for everyone. So in a whim, Anderson Silva took the fight against Cormier. Of course on basically three days notice it would be hard for Silva to pull this off. And Cormier ended up pulling through instead.
I can say this fight was lackluster for me just because of the Jones hype before the devastation. But both fighters were so respectful and Cormier was so thankful for Silva in this fight, otherwise he would've gotten pulled from 200. Overall, Cormier had to do what was necessary to keep his integrity, as this wasn't even a title fight, even if that means containing the fight a little and playing it safe.
Next, probably one of the most anticipated fights on the card was Brock Lesnar vs Mark Hunt. Now former mma fighter and current WWE star Brock Lesnar was a shock to this card when it was fisrt announced. Everyone wondered who would take the fight against him? Mark Hunt stood up to the plate and really got me pumped to see who would win. I really was rooting for Hunt to pull through, but Lesnar trained hard as well and took him to the ground each round; winning in decision.
Finally, we have the female mma fighters headlining the card. Misha Tate and Amanda Nunes are great fighters, and we can see that from their past. Nunes took the octagon by storm this past weekend and took down Tate and claimed the bantamweight title. Tate always positive says she will be back, and congratulated Nunes on her victory. I feel like maybe Rhonda will come back soonish. She was supposed to be back to fight in Madison Square Garden, but pulled off the card. So who will fight Nunes next? Will Holly Holm come back to re-claim her title? Or will another fighter stand up and claim the title from Nunes?
Overall I can say I did enjoy UFC 200, but I also feel that there are some more amazing cards to come. Specifically 202 I am so excited for. Next up is UFC 201 with Robbie Lawler defending his title against Tyron Woodley. The great thing about mma and UFC is that it can be so undpredictable, so I expect this year of fights to definitely be revolutionary.
