“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust. This is one of the hardest things to do yet we do it every day. When you go get your automobile fixed, you trust your car mechanic to diagnose and fix the problem correctly. When you go to the doctor, you trust your doctor to prescribe the right medicine to help regain your health. Even in a romantic relationship, you trust your partner. Without trust, none of the above would be possible. So why is trusting so hard? Here is an example: when you walk into a room you have never been into before and see a chair, you assume that this chair has a purpose. This purpose is to allow you to sit comfortably and relax. You trust this chair and its purpose. Now what if the chair was defective? You go into the room, sit down, and then you fall to the floor because one of the chair’s legs is broken. You trusted the chair and its purpose, but the chair let you down. How can you trust another chair ? Sometimes when we trust someone or something, we are let down. Trust. It is hard to do yet life would not be possible without it. So what does this Proverb mean when it says “Trust in the Lord?” It is simple yet so difficult. Trust God. Trust Him with anything and everything. I remember my freshman and sophomore year in college. I changed my major four times from pre-pharmacy to biology to kinesiology, before finally becoming a Christian Studies major. I was seeking my own will and understanding. I was trusting in my own abilities. It took a lot of trust to follow God’s call and become a Christian Studies major. It took even more trust to follow God’s call to Campbell Divinity School. But I can personally tell you that trusting in God will never cause you to fail. Trusting in your own understanding will. We do not know what our future holds. You cannot see what is just over the horizon whether it will be the best experience of your life or the greatest trial you will ever face. God does know what your future holds. He does know what is just over the horizon. He is already there. When we trust Him, He will take us by the hand and walk with us. No matter what we go through in life, whether it is good or bad, we can trust God because He will be with us. He is perfecting us. It is tough to trust God. But it will be the best decision you will ever make. Trusting God - He will never lead you astray.
