On June 16, 2015, Donald Trump announced his candidacy for the United States Presidency in front of Trump Towers in New York City.
"So, ladies and gentlemen, I am officially running for president of the United States, and we are going to make our country great again," Trump told the crowd in a lengthy 45-minute speech.
"Sadly, the American dream is dead," Trump said. "But if I get elected president, I will bring it back bigger and better and stronger than ever before."
On that Tuesday, I became a heck of a lot more interested in politics.
I found myself spending multiple hours late at night researching his views on issues and what he could potentially do for our country. Here's what I found:
1. "Make America Great Again"
His slogan is the most important line of his platform, and, in my opinion, he just nailed it. "Make America Great Again" tells us that America is lacking right now and we need change before it's too late. And to be honest, I've never heard of such a kick-ass slogan before.
2. He's his own American success story
Within the business, political and entertainment side of life, Trump is definitely a recipient of the "triple crown." He's been successful in every aspect. He's unashamed of his wealth and wasn't afraid to say that when "Forbes Magazine" estimated his net worth in 2013 to $3.2 billion this was only a conservative number. He obviously can self-finance, which might make a difference within our economy and the trillions of dollars of debt that we're currently in. If he's a billionaire today, he's obviously doing something right.
3. He's actually a conservative
Although he's gone back and forth a couple times with his views, he's pro-NRA and pro-life. He has even stated to The Associated Press that he has a pistol permit and he is a "big Second Amendment person."
4. He blew a gasket over the Chattanoga Shootings
"Get rid of gun-free zones. The four great marines who were just shot never had a chance,” Trump tweeted shortly after the shootings. “They were highly trained but helpless without guns.”
He's not an idiot when it comes to gun control. He makes great points concerning what's going on with terrorism and he called out President Obama for not calling the shooting acts of "Islamic terrorism."
5. He's promising jobs for students drowning in debt
He thinks it's a major issue that the federal government is making money off of its citizens' debt. Although he doesn't go into detail, he says he has plans to create jobs for students right out of college and he wants to do something about the problem as a whole. “That’s probably one of the only things the government shouldn’t make money off — I think it’s terrible that one of the only profit centers we have is student loans,” Trump said.
6. He calls out Obama within his stance on foreign policy
When asked about his views on foreign policy, he explains his distrust of China and says they're cheating the United States for "hundreds of billions of dollars by manipulating and devaluing its currency." In his speech at CPAC 2014, Trump said, "Our leadership is so weak and so pathetic that they could get away with it, and believe me, they're taking our jobs…and China's not the only one. You look at other countries, they're doing the same thing. They have no respect for our leader."
8. He's a businessman who focuses on business
Yeah, gay marriage and pro-life issues are important — but these issues aren't his main priority.
A Trump supporter was interviewed by ThinkProgress.com and said:
“The country is so far in debt, we’re losing so many jobs to foreign countries. I just think we need a businessman to run the country like a business,” Jim Nelle, a small business owner from Winterset, Iowa, said as he carried signs supporting Trump around. “I’m a Christian and I’ve always voted those issues in the past, like abortion was always big, but this election, it’s going to be different because if we don’t have a country, what difference does it make if you’re pro-abortion or anti-abortion? I just think we have to get the fiscal situation fixed first.”
9. He loves 'Merica.
He stands for all things red, white and blue. He even said: "We are the greatest country the world has ever known. I make no apologies for this country, my pride in it, or my desire to see us become strong and rich again."
10. His wife would be a total babe of a First Lady
Although she's his third wife, Melania is a former Slovenian model and Donny-boy, which says she knows a thing or two about style. Plus, she attends the Michael Kors Spring Fashion Show each year and I'm totally fine with MK running the world.
Watching Trump's every move for the last month has been pretty entertaining;. He's cocky, outspoken and all in all is an arrogant asshole who speaks his mind. But I think that's why he might have my vote. Why should we keep electing the same types of politicians to office when they continue to bring down our country?
Although I really don't think Trump will make it as the only Republican candidate running for president, I don't think his candidacy is too bad an idea.
He could quite possibly ruin any respect another country has for us right now, but why do we actually care about that? Maybe change is good and maybe Trump is what we need.
