To be a social chair does not mean that you are the most outgoing, social person in your sorority or fraternity, at least not all the time. It means that you have one of the most stressful jobs in the chapter, with the smallest amount of payoff. Sure, it's great to get the recognition when something goes great and you pull off an amazing social/formal, but the moment one thing goes wrong, you're the social chair that can't plan a thing.
There's more than people think, that goes into planning an event. First, you have to communicate with other fraternity's social chairs, which we all know is the hardest part. To begin with, boys have no idea what their plan is, and they try to throw things together last minute, which never works for girls. Especially on our campus at the University of Iowa, with our tier system, you have to strategically place those non alcs in there, in order to have registered events. Depending on your tier location, your entire semester could be just one non alc event after another, or a total breeze, with as many socials and date parties as you want.
To be a social chair, means that you can never satisfy everyone:
There will always be a girl who complains about the theme, and that she has nothing to wear.
There will always be a girl that complains about where the social is, and that she doesn't like the venue.
There will always be a girl that doesn't like the fraternity you're paired with, because she only ever hangs with one.
There will always be a girl that complains that there wasn't enough food for her to eat at formal.
There will always be a girl that complains about how crammed the party buses were, and that she needed more room.
And, there will always be a girl telling you how to do your job.
We all know that socials and events are one of the main things that every chapter member looks forward to. People want to meet new people, and that can't happen without socials. And with socials comes calling venues, reminding fraternities to turn in forms and that they need, to make sure their non alcs are done, turning in forms on time, and getting them approved by your advisor and chapter president.
If you are a social chair, I salute you and everything that you have done for your chapter, because I know it isn't easy and it seems like you can never do anything right. And if you aren't a social chair, thank yours for everything they do, because without them ,you would be sitting in, every Thursday night ,wondering what you could be doing with your life, which we all know is the last thing anyone wants to think about at this age.
