I love sports. If you are sitting next to me in Physics 2160 or Calculus 1960, you'll either see me doing two things: scrolling through Spotify to add new songs to my phone's playlist or reading articles from ESPN and Bleacher Report. During the NFL and College Football seasons, the only thing that will be on the television is Sportscenter and Breaking Bad. During the summer, I just wait for football season since it seems like it will be decades before the Phoenix Suns can even get to the playoffs. So while I wait, I like to think about what players are the best at every position. That's why I plan on ranking every major position in the NFL until the season starts... or I'm just left with offensive lineman.
The first entry in the Dalton Rabe "Way Too Early to Matter" NFL Rankings are the quarterbacks. These guys are usually the leaders of the team and are the key to an efficient offense. Most of the time, a team with a below average quarterback will finish with an 8-8 record in the regular season at best. So if you find your team's quarterback on this list, you're in good hands this season.
10. Matt Ryan: Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons were one of the most disappointing teams last year, starting out the season undefeated at 5-0 and then ending on a mediocre 8-8 to miss the playoffs again. The decline of Devonte Freeman could be looked at as the main reason for the Falcon's offensive decline, not Matt Ryan. Matt Ryan had a standard season for himself. He threw for 4,591 yards, 21 touchdowns, and a frustrating 16 interceptions. That is around the same pace Matt Ryan has achieved since the 2012 season. With his favorite receive Julio Jones fresh off of signing a new contract and great intangibles, Matt Ryan should still look to hit those same numbers, even though his other targets are only Eric Weems and Devin Hester.
9. Andy Dalton: Cincinnati Bengals
Andy Dalton would be a lot higher on this list if he won a playoff game in his career. It may not have been his fault for the Bengal's collapse in last year's playoffs, but that doesn't excuse any other year. We should still see stellar numbers between Dalton and AJ Green and we might see a playoff win.
8. Carson Palmer: Arizona Cardinals
If this list was all about the regular season, Carson Palmer would be in the top five on this list. However, we saw what happens when Carson Palmer is needed the most when he faced the Carolina Panthers for the NFC Championship where it seemed like every throw ended up in the defense's hands. If Palmer can stay healthy, I can imagine the Cardinals winning the NFC West.
7. Russell Wilson: Seattle Seahawks
Russell Wilson is one of the most entertaining quarterbacks to watch. His pocket awareness and scrambling ability can have defensive coordinators shaking their heads while his short accuracy has his offense marching down the field. If he can improve his deep accuracy, he will be an insane threat for anyone for the next five to eight years. The only reason Wilson isn't higher on the list is that the Seahawks have a stellar running game that doesn't require Wilson to step up.
6. Philip Rivers: San Diego Chargers
One of the most underappreciated quarterbacks in the league, Philip Rivers put up impressive numbers last year. Rivers through for a league second best 4792 yards. Sadly, Rivers fantastic season was wasted on a team with the second worst rushing attack in the NFL, a below average defense, an offensive line that allowed a career high forty sacks, and a 4-12 record. The Chargers record could have looked much worse if Rivers would not have consistently threw for 299.5 yards per game.
5. Drew Brees: New Orleans Saints
Drew Brees is a lot like Phillip Rivers. He is an amazing quarterback that can put up insane stats, but the team around them is less than stellar. The Saints do not have the rushing game other teams have to offer their quarterbacks, which raises Brees's values considerably. One could expect Brees to stumble this year and have his stats suffer from his high age, but Brees has kept Father Time at bay so far.
4. Ben Roethlisberger: Pittsburgh Steelers
Big Ben and Antonio Brown make the best QB/WR duo in the NFL. With Leveon Bell being suspended again, the Steelers need their two superstars to carry them to 4-0 so they can get as much of a lead in the tight AFC North as they can. Injuries plagued Big Ben last season, but he managed to gather the most passing yards per game when he was healthy.
3. Tom Brady: New England Patriots
Now before anyone types in the comments how Tom Brady is the best quarterback in the NFL now and forever, Tom's ranking is impacted by the current four game suspension. That means we have to value him at seventy-five percent of his current value. Brady has shown that he doesn't plan on regressing anytime soon. He's proven that he can throw for an insane amount of yards with the best tight-end in the league and a mediocre receiving core of Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola. With his proven experience in the playoffs and the regular season, he would rank higher than the next quarterback on this list if he didn't have a four game suspension.
2. Cam Newton: Carolina Panthers
There has been no quarterback that has been as polarizing as Cam Newton since Tim Tebow. You either love his touchdown dances and call it confidence and fun or you comment on how he is cocky and should have dove on the football during the Super Bowl. There are things that people can't argue with though. He is the reigning NFL MVP and led the Carolina Panthers to Super Bowl 50 and a 15-1 record with his number one wide receiver injured and a less than stellar offensive line. Cam was almost number one on this list, but we saw in Super Bowl 50 that he isn't consistent enough under pressure to warrant giving him the number one spot. He will have Kelvin Benjamin this year and more playoff experience under his belt. If Newton improves this year as much as he did last year, we could see a back-to-back MVP in the NFL.
1. Aaron Rodgers: Green Bay Packers
I don't think anyone didn't see this coming. Aaron Rodgers is the best quarterback in the NFL. Even with his top receiver injured last year, Rodgers managed to bring the Packers to the playoffs and nearly brought them to the NFC Championship game with his second Hail Mary of the year. Rodgers doesn't throw many interceptions and he is the most consistent player in the NFL Expect the Packers to be the playoffs again and maybe farther if Jordy Nelson doesn't tear an ACL walking to practice.
