If you spend almost any amount of time on the Internet regularly, you have more than likely come across a meme or two. Memes are essentially a form of internet comedy where there is usually a punchline or theme that gets delivered time and time again through new and hilarious variations. These quirky internet jokes have been gaining popularity within the last few years, but what with the arrival of the new year, I’d like to take a look back at the best memes of 2015.
10. “Me/Same/I’m the ____.”
One thing that became a meme in 2015 was people’s ability to relate to just about anything. Especially on strange and outrageous posts on the Internet, people will just comment things like “same” or “me” to show that they identify with the absurd notion. More recently, they will comment to identify with more specific things, just as equally as weird. For example, in a video of a girl jumping on a trampoline, you can expect a trend of comments like “I’m the trampoline” or “I’m the camera.” The beauty of this particular meme is just the outrageous nature of claiming to be or relating yourself to odd things.
9. *looks at smudged writing on hand*
This particular meme usually has a person or character list two or three things, looking down at smudged writing on their hands and totally mispronouncing the name.
8. John Cena
If anything, you’ve probably seen a few variations of this particular meme. The joke here is in videos, when people are about say a name or something important, the video cuts to an audio of a loud voice screaming “JOHN CENA!” and playing his theme.
Follow this link for a great example of the John Cena meme.
7. Halsey Lyrics + Spongebob Screen Caps
One meme that I’ll never truly understand the appeal of, but appreciate nonetheless, is putting text of lyrics from the artist Halsey’s new album, "Badlands," over screen caps from various and random episodes of Spongebob. There are variations with lyrics from other bands as well, but the most common ones seen are Halsey-influenced.
6. _____ and chill?
This meme is mostly funny because it criticizes the ridiculous phrase that is associating with hook-up culture in today’s society: “Netflix and chill?” Rather than the original, variations of this generally include various activities and interests rather than Netflix, such as “Destroying the patriarchy and chill?” or “Crying and chill?”
5. New phone, who dis?
This joke may be one of the most effective in telling someone you don't want to talk to them. The point here is when someone texts you or messages something and you do not wish to do it or would rather ignore them, you would reply with "new phone, who dis?" to show your indifference. There are several versions of this, some of which give the cold shoulder vibe better than others, such as "better standards, who dis?"
4. Breadsticks
The breadsticks meme became a whirlwind sensation very quickly. In this meme, the setup is that you are on a date with a person and your date says something you disagree with or dislike and so you start shoving breadsticks into your purse and flee the scene. It's a really great way to state how you feel about certain trends through the medium of humor.
3. Brain: you gotta.
One of my favorite memes of this year, this one attempts to explain irrational or non-neurotypical behavior. In this joke, your brain speaks to you and tells you to do something very uncommon and when you question why you would ever do something like that, your brain comically answers with, "you gotta."
2. Sounds fake...but OK.
Do you ever hear something that happened to someone else and you just can't believe it? Even after confirming that it's true? Well, this meme plays off that situation. In fact, it can be very average things, such as someone saying "I love this outfit. I got it for only six dollars," to which you'd answer, "That sounds fake but okay."
1. “You’ve heard of ____, now get ready for _____.”
This meme is my absolute favorite but is super simplistic. Actually, the only joke here is that you fill the blank with something and then fill the other blank with another thing that is the complete opposite of it. For example, "you've heard of doing your homework, now get ready for watching TV for six hours."
2015 had been a great year and has essentially redefined internet meme culture as a whole. You'll find that the jokes made today are vastly different in delivery than they were in the early 2000s. With the new year, hopefully this internet sensation will continue to live on and evolve.
