Books, friends, laughter and memories. Those are many of the things I will always remember from college.
Every college student has moments they will remember, while others have some they'd rather forget. Here are my top five college moments.
1.The First Day
The first day of college is one that I will remember for the rest of my life. walking through the halls of my first building to get to my first class was like going through The Maze Runner's movie 12 times. Each door I went through led to the wrong floor. That building was Ward Beecher Hall.
I also found where I belonged. All it took was one step into my Journalism Ethics classroom and I knew I had found my home at Youngstown State University.
2. Losing my car
I'll never forget where I parked my car. Not only did I get lost finding my first classroom but after the day was over I found myself searching for my car in the parking deck on Wick Ave. I could only imagine where it could be as I climbed each staircase and every ramp, failing to locate my 98 maroon Pontiac Grand Am.
After walking around for a good half hour, I stopped in the middle of the ramp as a parking services truck came to my rescue and located my car within a minute. Now, going into my senior year, I park in the smaller deck on the top level. My advice for freshmen, buy a car with a panic button. It will save your life.
3. Joining A News Outlet
Entering into my junior year, I never thought I would get the chance to work with people who would eventually become some of my best friends. As I walked into the little office, I was welcomed with happiness and dubbed the leader of a big writing project. I was the reporter for a story about foster children. Since that fateful day I have had the story published and received recognition from Ohio state Representative Dorothy Pelanda. This was my absolute favorite project and I will never forget the experience I have gotten from it.
4. Joining the 'Jamily'
To say I won't miss this group when I graduate would be the truth... Just kidding.
The Jambar has impacted me in ways that have helped shape me into the writer that I am today. I learned to put my quotes first and write around them later and to never used an Oxford comma anywhere in a story. They weren't joking either. This office is my home away from home during my class breaks. Along with learning the ins and outs of writing nothing will compare to the nights of super smash brothers in the office after production nights are over for the week or the memories from each Christmas party with games or walking down the concrete streets of Federal and Phelps.
A day not spent in the Jambar office is a very sad day. Unless I have my Dunkin Donuts coffee.
5. Soledad O`Brien
I walked on campus with the intention of attending all of my classes that day and then going home. That was until 5:30 p.m. came around. My professor asked me if I wanted to go meet one of the most famous journalists to date. My jaw hit the floor as I responded with a resounding yes. Lucky for me I had a dress in my car that I packed for an interview. Minutes later I was dressed and my coworkers and I drove over and sat in on a Q&A session followed by dinner and a speech from O'Brien.
I hope that students who are reaching the end of their school road can look back and have good memories. Whether it's losing your car or meeting one of your role models.
