Top 12 Beatles Songs: Ranked

In honor of John Lennon’s 75th birthday this October, I have gathered the Top 12 Beatles songs we should listen to over and over on repeat.

This has been one of the hardest tasks. How do I pick? We all know the Beatles have numerous brilliant songs to choose from. If you asked me what is my all-time favorite band, I would say the Beatles of course. The Beatles are a legendary band that has influenced many artists throughout the years. These four lads were unique; they changed music. I consider myself a huge Beatles fan. I have loved them since the womb, literally. My dad would play Beatles songs and attached headphones while I was in my mum’s tummy.

Here is a list of the top songs that are special and have sweet meanings.

12. "Blackbird"

Paul McCartney wrote this song during the Civil Rights movements in The U.S. McCartney said blackbird was the symbol for a black woman. “Take these broken wings and learn to fly." It is symbolic because McCartney wrote it as motivation and hope for individuals suffering from racism and discrimination.

11. "Strawberry Fields Forever"

When you hear this song, it makes you want to just get up and go anywhere. It makes you escape. According to Rolling Stone, Lennon wrote this song about his childhood. Fun fact: there is a little section in Central Park in New York dedicated to this song, and the entrance is called Strawberry Fields. It is said John would take his son to play in this section of the park .

10. "Get back"

The song has a rock and roll vibe and a blues tunes, and makes you want to get up on your feet and dance. This was the Beatles last song they sang at the rooftop of the Apple records.

9. "I Want to Hold Your Hand"

Nowadays you hear songs about guys wanting to hook up with you, when back then all the Beatles wanted was to hold your hand. In 1963, it was the band's number one hit in the U.S. They appeared on the Ed Sullivan show, and this song was America's first exposure to the Lennon-McCartney magic song-writing.

8. "Come Together"

When you hear the first opening tune, it automatically makes you want to rock out. It has a rebellious feeling to it. This was the last song recorded by all four lads. The special meaning of this song is "C’mon, lets join forces."

7. "Eight Days a Week"

This love song became the seventh number one hit in the U.S. for the Fab Four. It's such a classic song. Who wouldn’t want this song dedicated to them? They don’t love you only for seven days of the week, but for eight. This song will automatically get you in such a good mood.

6. "In My Life"

This should probably be played at every graduation. It was played at both my elementary and middle school graduations, and it just stuck to me, almost as my childhood soundtrack. When this song plays, it makes you remember in flashbacks all those special important moments in life. Almost presented in your mind as images on a power point.

5. "Hey Jude"

You might not even know the words, but I'm sure you have sang along to the chorus "Na na na na na na Hey Jude." This iconic song is known for the Beatles at the time of the recording allowing in hundreds of fans to join them in the studio, and encouraging their fans to sing in the chorus. McCartney wrote this song for John Lennon's five-year-old son Julian. I will forever sing along to this song. Super catchy.

4. "Let it Be"

This song is profound, every time I hear this song it gives me the chills. Paul McCartney wrote this song. When I heard it live twice, at AT&T Stadium in San Francisco and in the Los Angeles Dodger Stadium last summer, it filled my body with chills and filled my heart with joy. It is so good that you can listen to over and over and never get tired of it.

3. "Yesterday"

This is the most covered Beatles song. "Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away." Every time I hear this song it makes me just want to rethink life and get nostalgic. This is probably one of the best written songs from McCartney. Originally it was going to be called “Scrambled Eggs."

2. "Don't Let Me Down"

Written by John Lennon, and was played at Apple Records rooftop in 1969. Rolling Stone magazine described it as, "Live as can be." This was one of Lennon’s most intense love songs. It was written about the infatuation he had with Yoko Ono. “I'm in love for the first time.” It is a deep song about telling your lover, please don’t disappoint me, don't take everything you have given me.

1. "Something"

Two words: super romantic. The tunes are perfect. Can I say super cute how all four lads invited their girlfriends at the time to join them for their music video in the meadows? George Harrison wrote this song. Even though he did not write a whole lot, this song is gold. This is the second-most covered Beatles song. This is probably one of my favorite songs. Potential wedding song.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
