Congrats, you have been accepted to college and you are about to embark on the best four years of your life. You just got done being at the very top of the totem pole being a senior in high school, but now you go right back down to the bottom and even lower than the bottom, you are now a freshman in college.
1. Don't skip every class
Come on now, we all tell freshman to never skip class, but we have all been there and have done that. So the best we could say would be not to skip EVERY class. As a college student now, there are just times that you wake up and you think about what would make your day just so amazing, and every once in awhile it is to skip that 9 a.m. class. As long and you get your work done, then you can manage to sleep in a little bit.
2. Don't start a series on Netflix
Refer to number one. If you think that you have this free time to start a show on Netflix, you are crazy. Starting a show on Netflix will cause you to for sure skip every class. Those late nights staying up watching just one more episode because you want to find out if the main characters fall in love or not, will cause you to skip that next morning class. Now this doesn't happen for everyone, some people can stay up late and still go to class. They are special people and I would give them a pat on the back if I ever met them.
3. Don't spend time alone in your room all the time
College is not just about getting a degree and planning the rest of your life. College is about making memories and making friends with people that you will have in your wedding and will be at your children's first birthday party. Sitting in your room doing nothing but homework and reading will make you go crazy. Every once in awhile just go outside and talk to humans. I promise they don't bite. And when the humans start to get annoying you can just walk right back to your room and lock the door until you decide to adventure outside again.
4. Don't forget about the meal plan
When living on campus, you are required to buy a meal plan with your dorm. This is the best thing that will happened to you. Well, maybe. The meals on campus might not be the best food you have ever had, or taste that your mom just cooked you a really warm homemade meal, but you have already paid for it, so why go spend more money on food when you could save that for clothes or spring break. Even when the food might be a little cold or looks like it was made three days ago, most colleges always have a salad bar. So that could be the best option at times.
5. Don't decide to go out every single night
Anyone that has been a freshman before will tell you the same thing. Being a freshman you will be hot on the market for everyone wanting you to come to the parties because you are new faces. Everyone wants to get to know the new people and see how they act at parties. Saying no is okay. Weeknights is the best time to say no because you have class the next day and you don't want to be that freshman that walks into class with the same clothes on from last night. Even when you think people wont be able to tell, they will. Even the teacher will be able to tell.
6. Don't think you are a hot shot
In high school, you might have been the prom queen, the game saving athlete, the class president, the class know-it-all, but remember that you new in college. If you come to campus acting like you are still this big hot shot, I hate to tell you, but it will be really hard to make friends. Everyone is coming to college to start fresh if they want to or not. Don't keep reminding people what you were in high school. Those days are now over and it's time to make you something in college.
7. Don't skip leg day
Working out is proven to release stress and college is basically a Greek word for stress. Okay, maybe it isn't, but you get the point. You are going to be given more information than you really think your brain can handle. The fix for not going crazy with all the stress? Working out. Colleges will have gyms somewhere on the campus and it is usually a very small fee. That very small fee could be the saving grace of you going nuts, so I would say that it would be worth it. Even if your college doesn't have a gym or you don't want to pay for the fee, you can always run around campus and that will do just as well. Get a group of friends together and just go for a run before you start on your homework.
8. Don't lock yourself out of your dorm every day
Coming to college means responsibility is all on you. It isn't on your Mom would will always wait up for you to make sure you get home safe. You will have an RA in your dorm, but they are not your mother. They have classes just like you do and probably harder because they are older. Coming in at 3:00 a.m. and locking yourself out is not really going to make them too happy when they have to go get the master key and let you in. During the day, your RA will have class and so you will have to just sit outside your door and wait for either your roommate to get back or wait for the RA to come and let you in. So, just before you go anywhere, make sure you have your key. It will save a lot of trouble and waiting outside your dorm room door when you could be inside sleeping or studying.
9. Don't be scared to go to your professors office hours
They might seem like they are there to ruin your life on the first day when they are telling you all about the class, but they really are just there to help you, but only if you want help. You are the ultimate choice maker when it comes to deciding if you need help or not. They aren't going to be like your high school teachers and just help you out even if you don't ask. You will have to ask for help and you will be really surprised with how much they are will to help you with. Even if you have questions about the campus in general or having a hard time getting use to college, they are there to help you. You wont be the first one that has gone to them for help I promise.
10. Don't drop a class until the last possible minute
Dropping classes happens in college. There are not many college students that have gone all throughout college without dropping a class. Do not think that you are the only one that will ever drop a class. I will say though, if you get one bad grade on a test, you can still pull it up. Colleges will have a list of the date of the last day you can drop. Go talk to your professors and see if there is anyway that you will be able to pull your grade up if it is getting close to that date, and if there isn't then you still have a chance to drop the class.
With all of this being said I hope that you all have a wonderful freshman year! College is the best time you will ever have! Good luck!
