Too much ice cream equals a tummy ache, or brain freeze, or worse, both. Too much running equals muscle cramps, lungs on fire and/or joint damage. Too much bread, pasta and potatoes equals excess fat due to sodium and carbohydrates. Too much rain equals flooding. Too much wind equals tornadoes. Too much studying equals mental strain or anxiety. Too much spending equals bankruptcy. Too much perfume is overwhelming. Too much reading or T.V. in the dark can equal worsening eyesight.
Life is a balancing act. One some people are better at than others. Some areas are easier to walk on the tightrope than others. So why do we sometimes expect our lives to be solely focused in one or two areas? Is it a societal thing? A media influence? Or is it a genetic instinct? I can't say for sure but I know this: too much of a good thing turns into a really bad thing.
When I was working at a camp this past summer we had a saying: When a good thing becomes a god thing it becomes a bad thing. Thus saying, things in life, even good things, can become idols. It is so easy to slip into this train of thought, this process of action. Why?
Because we are beings of worship. We so easily forget that, especially when it comes to our things, to our relationships. It is so incredibly simple to shift our focus away from what is important.
Because the one thing in this entire universe that will never be too much of a good thing is God.
In this life, it is so hard to focus on the right things, to walk that tightrope of life. Balance is a daily struggle, a path we so easily slip off of toward too much junk food, too much work or too much hope in the wrong people.
The beautiful thing is that we can get back on the tightrope. We can take the time to shift our focus back to the one it was meant for. We worship this world because it's easier than worshiping the one we cannot physically touch. But that worship, the right and true worship, is so much better than any other.
