From a young age girls have been told what "beautiful" is. We saw what beautiful was when we were 6 while playing with barbie dolls, and as we grew up we saw it with models in magazines, TV commercials, and on billboards. Models are EVERYWHERE. When you look at a model most think or say, "she is beautiful, literally perfect." But if you look past the picture or the commercial you will see that the model might actually be a little bit too skinny, but to the world she is considered "perfect". Agnes Hedengard, a 19 year old swedish model, recently uploaded a video onto Youtube about "being too big". Might I add that she is one model that I would call "literally perfect." Anyway, in the video, Agnes is a 5 year model, unable to find work, and is slamming the model industry for only allowing unhealthy and underweight women to model. Agnes states that she has a body-mass index of 17.5, and according to the National Institute of Health anything under 18.5 is considered underweight. While watching the video of her in a bikini my jaw actually dropped. Her hips were too big and her butt was too fat? For a second I felt like I was obese while looking at her. The scary part about all of this is that if she is too fat to be a model then the models that are getting jobs must be even skinnier. Therefore, everyday we are looking at, and most are striving to look like, people who aren't even a healthy weight. When I'm with my friends atleast once in a conversation I hear the words "I'm fat" or "I need to go on a diet". While dieting is good to a certain extent the word fat is thrown around like it's nothing. The word fat is a very sensitive word and if it used in the wrong way it can end up hurting or potentially destroying someones life. Why is the modeling industry trying to make people think that beautiful is underweight? Because when I look at my sister and all my friends and family I see beautiful. But I dont just see beautiful, I also see healthy. So the next time you open the fridge or pantry and you see that chocolate cake or chips, don't say, "I can't, I'm too fat" go and eat it, because realistically you aren't as fat as you think you are, and 15 years from now you're going to wish you had the body that you have now. Now, go ask your mom if she wishes she had the body she had at you're age, she'll probably say yes. Anyway, it is time to finally end the fat shaming and encourage a healthy weight and lifestyle. Agnes is one beautiful, brave girl who does a great job in her video speaking out agaisnt fat shaming. After being called "too fat" she posts a video of herself in a bikini. I don't know many girls who would do that. YOU GO GIRL!
