From that one black and/or gay cast member in each season of "The Real World," to that one hilarious white person that somehow got cast in a Tyler Perry movie, and everything in between, tokens run our social groups and we love them. That type of exclusivity isn't easily managed. Here's what it's like being that token:
1. Everyone assumes you're from somewhere exotic.
2. When you introduced yourself, you had to repeat your name two or three times because you don't have a simple name like Chris or Emily.
3. No one ever forgets your name because it's not something boring like Chris or Emily.
4. Everyone thinks you're cultured, but honestly, you're like:
5. When your brothers/sisters are drunk, they always seem to tell you that you're their favorite [insert minority group] friend.
6. You have to be the one that explains when something someone said was insensitive.
7. There's the one brother/sister that keeps getting you mixed up with someone else they know because they're of the same minority group.
8. Sometimes you get asked the dumbest questions regarding your minority group or culture.
9. Your brothers/sisters constantly get your minority group or culture mixed up with another one.
10. ...and then profusely apologize about it.
11. ...because, even though you just met over a beer pong tournament a few months ago, they love you.
12. ...or you wouldn't have gotten in, duh.
13. So be proud of your token-ness. It's your superpower.
14. ...because basically, you're the Beyoncé of your fraternity/sorority. Congratulations.
