On Tuesday, January 12, 2016 NFL owners voted overwhelmingly to approve the relocation of the Rams to Inglewood, California in part of a potential joint-team venture with the Chargers. I can tell you exactly where I was and how I felt. I can only describe how I felt as betrayed. In 2010, I remember being excited because Stan Kroenke, a native Missourian, had bought majority ownership of the team and it was such a bright day for St. Louis football. And here I am roughly five years later feeling deceived.
I couldn't believe the same guy who said he was going to do everything he could to keep the Rams in St. Louis was the same guy who was leading the charge to take them out. Kroenke submitted a twenty-nine page relocation request that was highly disparaging to the city of St. Louis along with the belief that they could no longer support three professional sports teams. To say the least, I felt insulted by this owner, but that doesn't mean I'm going to start burning my jerseys and everything. I am only uncertain of my fandom of the NFL in the future. I don't know if I could bring myself to support an organization that doesn't reward loyalty, like the Rams. I don't know if I can support an organization that in essence rewards a team for failure, whether it's the new stadium for the Rams in Inglewood or the Raiders who got $100 million dollars, and they didn't even have a stadium plan in their current market (nor did San Diego). I don't know if I can bring myself to support an organization that will have guidelines for anything and impose their will regardless of if they're followed. I understand that business is business, but disparaging the hard-working people of my wonderful state of Missouri was completely unnecessary.
I am glad that I at least got to see one game, even if it was a loss. I will always have the memories of going to see my favorite team with my best friend for the rest of my life. And I will always have the memories of the Greatest Show on Turf, the "Only in America" story that almost no other team has. I will always remember Warner, Faulk, Holt, and BRUUUUUUUUUUUUCE. There's a lot more I could say, but it is probably for the best that I don't. To the former St. Louis, I want to say thank you for the memories. It was truly a pleasure to follow the organization even through the tough years. I won't wish any ill will on any of the players, coaches, or even Stan Kroenke himself, but I will no longer support the Rams.
