Dearest Little Girl,
I know you're only four but there are so many adventures coming your way, and it is only right that I give you advice for when you're older. It may seem silly now, but I figured I could give you a heads up on what's ahead. I never had a sister to look up to being that I am the baby of the family and the only girl, so think of this as a favor. No one told me what to wear, how to handle boys, or what it means to get your life together; I figured it out on my own, and I'm still solving the puzzle day by day. Don't fear my little buddy, help is on its way.
Rule #1
As a girl, stand your ground.
Most of the time, girls are looked at as weak and vulnerable but be the opposite. Don't ever be afraid to stand up for yourself. When you have no fear with words and protecting other people, you tend to gain a new perspective of yourself. It has taken me a while to learn how to not be afraid of my own words, but since I've figured it out--I've never felt more alive. I walk around now, not afraid to face my enemies...the people who did used to scare me. It was the realization that, people hated me because I was always the bigger person or had the most grace, and that is what it takes to make it through the day.
Rule #2
Never, ever let a boy define your happiness.
What they say is true, "Boys--can't live with them, can't live without them." As you grow up, unfortunately your heart will be broken more times than you wanted but be sure that somewhere along the way, you write the epic love story you deserve. I know being heart broken hurts and it feels as though nothing could ever mend your broken heart, but it gets better--I promise. I have had my fairytale story, and though it didn't end the way I had hoped, it helped me believe in love all over again. Always believe, but know, a boy doesn't make your happiness. What defines your happiness is how you embrace every opportunity that is offered to you, a boy is just a mere accessory.
Rule #3
Indulge yourself in literature.
There is magic in the words of a book. Yeah, you can improve your imagination to new heights, but you find yourself in the words of others. New stories equal new adventures, which brings new chances to better your being. When you bury your nose in a book, you're taken into a world that you wish existed or you learn lessons that can be applied to your own life. Never underestimate the power of a book, plus--a well-educated woman who knows her literature, is a sexy woman.
Rule #4
Surround yourself with good, wholesome friends.
When you are at your lowest, who's there? When you are celebrating your joys in life, who is right next to you? Well, I'd surely hope it is your best friend. Forget the people who are your "Ain't Sh*t friends," because chances are, they're only friends with you because you make them look better. Find the one person who is your "Ride or Die." These are the people who are real with you even when you don't want to hear it but they're also the ones who will be your #1 fan in everything you do. These are the ones you will grow old with, never let them go.
Rule #5
Know I'm always here for you.
By the time you read this, and actually understand where I'm coming from, I'll probably have a big-kid job and be married with kids. Just because I'll have a life of my own, doesn't mean I won't have time for you. You've grown to be my best friend and my favorite girl, and nothing could ever change that. Don't ever be afraid to call or text me, even knock on my door. I'm making you a promise, and I swear to always live by it. My baby chica and my main girl, forever you will be. I hope you learn to live by the advice I've given you, I see the light in your eyes and I know you'll dominate in the paths you choose.
Love you always,
The big sister you always will have
