To My Little Sister, You Make Me So Proud

I do miss you, even when I don't act like it.

To my little sister,

I know that being the only one at home now that I'm away for college is difficult. I know that it's frustrating for you to have to do all of the chores by yourself now. I know that sometimes it's probably hard to deal with mom and dad alone.

But also know that if anyone is capable of making it work, it's you.

I am so incredibly proud of the person you are becoming. It makes me so happy to see you being your own person and not caring what other people think about you. You figured out much earlier than I ever did that what other people think doesn't matter, and that has always been one of my favorite things about you.

I know that sometimes you get worried because you don't know what you want to do when you get older or even where you want to college. Don't stress. You still have so much time to decide, and the fact that you're already thinking about it so early tells me that you have nothing at all to worry about.

I want you to know that it fills my heart with pride to see you joining clubs and taking on service and leadership roles just like I did when I was in high school. I've always tried to set a good example for you, and seeing you already doing all of these amazing things with your life lets me know that I succeeded in that on some level.

I love the level-headedness and quiet leadership that you bring to every single thing that you do. I love that you don't let the fact that you're quiet stop you from standing up for not only yourself but also others when necessary. I love that you own every single part of your personality, no matter what anyone else thinks. You always speak your mind and you don't ever let anyone walk all over you, and that's important.

You've already accomplished more than I had at your age, and you still have a couple of years left to do more in high school before you even get to college. Keep working hard. Keep speaking your mind. Keep fighting to become the very best version of yourself. Don't let anything or anyone stop you, especially not some stupid boy. (Although knowing you, the boy thing won't be a problem. Lord help any boy that tries to play with your feelings.)

Even though I may not always say it or even act like it, I do miss you when I'm away at college. Every time I see something that reminds me of you, I get a little sad that I have to wait until I come home to tell you about it in person. I love you, little sis. I can't wait to see how you continue to grow as a person.

Sincerely,

Your Big Sister

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
