To My Parents, From Your College Daughter

All that is too long to be said over the phone.

To My Parents, From Your College Daughter
Francesca Spinelli

As ungrateful as I can be at times, or not see things the way you do, it really is true that you know what is best for me. You’ve made me into who I am today, and no matter how many ups and downs we have in life, you will always be my role models and best friends. You spoil me in more ways than one, but mostly I am spoiled in the aspect of how much care and the love you give to me and my siblings.

You have always taught me to put others first but never to leave myself behind. You both have shown me how to love and care for others the way you do for each other and all of us. The love I see in you both gives me hope for my future, and makes me know what love is.

You've shown me how to chase my dreams and never settle. You both have given me a life that other people aren't as fortunate to have, and I will always be grateful for that (even if I forget to show it sometimes). You push me to be great and constantly offer me all of your support with (almost) everything I do.

Thank you for celebrating my successes with me and not discouraging me when I have failures. Thank you for showing me how to find happiness and how to deal with sadness. Thank you for always making me a better person and teaching me how to be a hardworking, motivated, and dedicated young woman.

Without the two of you I wouldn't have made it as far as I have. I have learned to be grateful and loving to everyone because that's what you taught me. I always appreciate the advice you give me even if it seems like I’m not listening. I am, but in my head I’m just thinking that I didn't want you to be right (again).

Being away at college has only made our bond stronger. It was a bumpy road at first, not having my parents when I’m sick or stressed (or in need of a home cooked meal). Being away showed me how appreciative I am for my parents and for the lengths they go through for my education.

You continue to show me how to be a better person, and how to live my life the way I want to. You show me how to be independent and how to love myself for me.

So thank you for everything you do for me and thank you for being the best parents a child could ask for. Always know that I will be forever grateful to have been blessed with such amazing parents, who have taught me so much in order for me to succeed in life, as you have.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
