Every week I see my friends post countless numbers of articles that try to explain their thoughts and emotions that come as a result of their mental illnesses. From anxiety to depression and everything in between, I've read plenty that try to tell what life is like for those individuals. However, as someone who has many friends that go through their day to day lives struggling with a variety of mental illnesses, I wanted to make them aware of the thoughts and feelings that I, as their friend have towards them.
First off, I want you to know that as your friend, I have never, and will never judge you for the way you were feeling on any particular day. I won't be upset if you don't respond to my text or call, and if you need your time alone. I'll understand when you let me know that plans need to be cancelled, or postponed. But I simply ask that you communicate with me. Let me know what you're feeling. As your friend, I care a lot about you. And your well-being is extremely important to me. But I never want to assume something is wrong, so don't be afraid to be honest with me.
I also want you to know that, as cliche as it sounds, I will always be there for you. As I mentioned earlier, I know you need space sometimes. But I also know that laughter and company can help bring a smile to your face. So don't push me away when I try to see how you're doing. It really is because I care about you. You never know, I may crack a few jokes to make you laugh.
No matter what choices you make in terms of treatments and medications, know that I support you. I may not agree with what you choose, but regardless, as your friend, I want you to know that I will be there to see how your treatments are working, and to make sure you're getting better each and every day. I want what is best for you, and I want to see you improve.
I'm always a phone call away. Whether you want to vent about the day, or simply have some company, do not ever doubt that I will be there. I'll always offer my prayers, because I know there is nothing I can do to fix anything for you, but I know a God who can. So just know that I'm always praying for you.
I will bring you a milkshake or anything to make you smile. Whatever you need, all you have to do is ask. Trust me when I say that a little chocolate can turn around any bad day. And a hug. Hugs are always great. And I'll send you pictures of babies and puppies, because they are too cute to keep you sad.
However, I want my friends to know that they are much more than their mental illness. I know it can feel overwhelming, but there is so much more to you than that. You are not your anxiety, you are not your depression, you are not anything else that can make you feel unwell.
No, I don't know exactly what you're going through. But I care about you, I love you, and I want to help you. No matter what you feel, no matter what you say, and no matter ow you're doing, my friendship will never change.
