10 Simple, Often Overlooked Tips For Surviving Finals
Hello Focus

With dreaded finals just around the corner, get a head start and check out these tips!

1. Buy more #2 pencils

At this point in the semester, you have probably said R.I.P. to a number of pens and pencils. But remember: You can study all you want, but if you don't have a pencil you're not passing the exam. Make sure they are sharpened and have a usable eraser, as well!

2. Load up on peppermints

Peppermints have been proven to help you focus, so bring a couple to your exam to keep your mind concentrated.

3. Don't skip out on sleep

While it is tempting to pull multiple all-nighters during finals week to study, your brain cannot function well without rest. Shoot for 6-8 hours the night before a final.

4. Eat a real breakfast

If your exam is in the morning, make sure you give yourself enough time to have a well-balanced breakfast. Grabbing a pop tart on your way out the door will not do the trick before a final!

5. Study in new places

If you are the type of person to stay in the same place studying for 8 hours-- stop! Moving to a new spot to study will help you refocus. Plus. it will force you to get fresh air, stretch, and take a brain break.

6. Go to office hours

Yes, I know you have heard your professor announce their office hours a thousand times. And yes, I know it doesn't seem all that exciting to chill with your professor in his office. However, not only is it good to get to know your professors and show them that you are putting in an effort, but in a smaller setting, they will also explain things slower and maybe even give you advice on how to best prepare for the exam.

7. Study with classmates

This will make the experience more fun and less stressful. Plus, you'll be able to explain things to each other and quiz each other to study.

8. Make a to-do list

Trying to study for three final exams, write two final papers, and prepare for your final presentation all at the same time can be very stressful. Making a list or study schedule will help keep you organized and limit your anxiety.

9. Turn off your cell phone

Not to sound like your mom, but this is seriously beneficial. Less distractions will keep you focused on your studying and allow you to make the most of your time.

10. Find the therapy dogs

Most college campuses will have therapy dogs around during finals. Check the library and pet some good dogs. It will help, I promise.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
