Going on an interview can be very scary and nerve racking. Here are a few tips you can use to help relieve that stress.
1. Rest the night before.
Make sure to get a good amount of sleep the night before your interview. Don't go out and party till all hours of the night. If you walk in to your interview yawning, you'll automatically give off a bad vibe. It's always good to get seven to eight hours of sleep, that way you are rested and ready to go!
2. Always have your cover letter and resume.
You should bring a hard copy of your cover letter and resume just in case. Having your papers right there for them to look at is good so that if they have any questions about either, you can show them right there.
3. Don't over prepare.
There is such a thing as being over-prepared. Over-preparing can cause you a lot of anxiety, and quite honestly, you can't prepare yourself for everything. You don't want to make yourself more stressed out than you already are. Prepare, but remember the limit.
4. Relax.
They can tell when you're tense. It will show if you are wound up. Take deep breaths and remember that you're having a conversation. This isn't life or death. You will make it through.
5. Speak clearly.
Make sure everything you say is loud and clear. Don't mumble. If you're constantly being asked to repeat yourself, that's not a good sign.
6. Smile and be cheerful.
Be sweet. Smile. Laugh. Don't be a Debbie Downer. You don't want to make them fall asleep. Again, they will be able to tell if you're nervous. Project confidence and make them intrigued and interested in what you have to offer.
7. Wear bright colors.
Blacks and whites are professional, but they are also dull and boring. Throw a little color into your wardrobe. It will make you stand out and maybe even start a little side conversation.
8. Turn off your cell phone.
It's completely unprofessional to have your phone on during an interview. If your phone is on, it should at least be on vibrate or silent.
9. Hygiene.
Shower. Wash your hands. Comb your hair. Brush your teeth. This is all stuff everyone should know! You might as well kiss that job goodbye if you smell like the inside of a dumpster.
10. Posture.
Sit up straight. It shows confidence, enthusiasm, and eagerness.
11. Show up early.
It's better to be early just in case you have to fill out paperwork. Also, it makes you look good!
12. Do your research.
Know the company you want to work for. If you don't know what your applying for, then how do you expect to get the job? Know your facts.
13. Use appropriate language.
Make sure to keep your language clean and respectable. Do not use inappropriate words or phrases. Joking around is okay as long as it's tasteful.
14. Confidence.
Go in with a can-do kind of attitude. Do your best and show them what you know. Be confident. You have as much a chance of getting the job as any other applicants. As long as you are confident and know what you want you are good to go!
15. Be honest.
Don't lie. Tell them how great you are and what you can bring to this job. Explain how you can be a remarkable asset.
When it's over
don't stress. You did your best. Remember that anyone would be lucky to have an excellent employee/intern like you!
