My boyfriend classifies as close as you can get to being “addicted” to computer games. From League of Legends, H1Z1, and now to the new game, Overwatch, he is truly playing games nine and a half out of 10 times that I ask him what he is doing. With all this gaming time, for a while, it became rather annoying when all our telephone conversations revolved around, “hang on I’m playing”, to complete silence on the other end of the line. You could say after a few too many times of this happening, I finally realized not to call during his “prime gaming hours.” Don’t get me wrong, it was hard at first to figure out what to do to get used to all this gaming time, especially since I personally never play computer or video games in general. But somehow, we’ve managed to find a happy balance between “gaming time” and “dating time”.
With these tips and reminders hopefully you too can find a way to not go crazy while dating a gamer boyfriend.
1. They will not, and I repeat not, text you back.
With having a gamer boyfriend I have quickly found out that if they are gaming they will not respond to you. BUT DON’T WORRY! The not responding for hours on end doesn’t mean they don’t want to talk to you. It means they are extremely distracted and honestly probably don’t even hear the phone going off a million times. And to them while in their gaming world, they truly just don’t realize how much time has passed.
2. FaceTime them- it can be really funny.
I’ve personally found at night it is fun to FaceTime my boyfriend while he plays games. Listening to him talk to his friends is absolutely hilarious. He says the oddest things, and makes the funniest faces, and it makes for a fun night full of lots of laughs.
3. You have your own personal computer technician.
With all the gaming and electronic time he spends he is bound to know everything there is to know about computers and electronic devices. This week when we went to the beach, my family couldn’t figure out the sound for the TV for about thirty minutes. Of course, two seconds after he looked at it, he was able to fix it. It’s a nice little added bonus to having a gamer boyfriend in times of a “TV crisis”.
4. Remember not to tell them important information while they are gaming.
You might think they are listening to you, but they aren’t. If you are telling them an important occasion they need to be somewhere or something super specific in general, it’s better to just wait until after they are done to make sure you have their full attention.
5. Make sure you both establish a balance between “gaming time” and “dating time.”
This is the key to dating a gamer. Talk to him and find a way to create time where he can “unplug” from the day by “plugging” into his games and a time where you all can just talk and tell each other about your day.
Having a gamer boyfriend will continue to surprise me every day with how funny he can truly be while in his “gaming zone.”
