ESPN College Gameday

It's been a big weekend for college football, so in case you were preoccupied, here are a few of the high points.

It's the second week of October and that means it's time for The Red River Showdown between the unranked University of Texas and number 20 Oklahoma. Each team came in with a 2-2 record, but one walked away with a losing record.

Dede Westbrook had three touchdown catches and set an Oklahoma record with 232 yards receiving in a single game. The Sooners put up 672 offensive yards (the most allowed by a UT team ever) in the 40-45 victory.

In a SEC rivalry game so big that ESPN College Game Day set up shop in College Station Saturday, number 8 Texas A&M took on number 9 Tennessee in a showdown of the undefeated teams. When Lee Corso brought out Lady Reveille, Smokey and the Vols took it as a challenge.

After coming from behind in their first 5 victories of the season, a 28-14 deficit to begin the fourth quarter didn't seem to phase the Volunteers. With a 21-point fourth quarter, they drove the game to overtime. But, in the end, the 12th Man of Texas A&M, found throughout Kyle Field, prevailed in the second half. Texas A&M was able to score a touchdown while Tennessee was unable to find the end zone, ending the game 45-38, Aggies.

One of the biggest names this college football season has been The University of Houston and their coach, Tom Herman. Between discussion of a possible team jump from the American to the Big XII and a possible coach jump to a certain SEC team who fired their coach mid-season (I'm looking at you LSU!) there has been something in the water in Houston. Set to take on unranked American rival, Navy, the number six Cougars were expected to sink the midshipmen.

But playing at home with their full Corps behind them, Navy had no intention to go down without a fight. Still reeling after the graduation of former Heisman candidate, Keenan Reynolds, the midshipmen went toe-to-toe with the cougars in the first half, ending the half tied 20-20. Scoring an additional 21 points in the third quarter, Navy grabbed the lead and held on for dear life. After an attempted comeback in the fourth quarter, the Cougars still found their dreams of a perfect season dashed by an unranked team.

And we can't forget about my Mustangs! SMU traveled to American conference rival Tulsa on Friday night. Four quarters were just not enough to decide the game! The Mustangs fell to the Hurricanes in overtime 40-43, but after the game the team of Jordan Wyatt and Horace Richardson led the FBS in interceptions with four each.

Other game highlights include:

Number 1 Alabama defeated number 16 Arkansas 49-30.

Number 2 Ohio State defeated unranked Indiana 38-17.

Number 3 Clemson defeated unranked Boston College 56-10.

Number 4 Michigan defeated unranked Rutgers 78-0.

Number 25 Virginia Tech defeated Number 17 UNC 34-3.

Number 21 Colorado fell to unranked USC 21-17.

Due to Hurricane Matthew, the LSU-Florida, Tulane-UCF and the Georgia-South Carolina games have been postponed to later dates.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
