Monday is Independence Day – one of the most anticipated and celebrated days of the year in our fantastic country. Countless backyard barbeques, lake boat races, and beachside fireworks will happen, and people will celebrate the founding of the best country in the world by those who knew how incredible this place would become.
As we celebrate, though, oftentimes something is lost. We celebrate the things that make our country great – and there are so many things. However, we must not forget the price that has been, is, and will continue to be paid for the luxury, safety, and equality of the people living here. There is a price for the pursuit of happiness. Freedom is not free – for anyone.
There are so many groups that must be acknowledged – and this article will barely scratch the surface. The groups following are just a few of which who help to create an outstanding country.
Firstly, our troops. I cannot possibly imagine the bravery and devotion to your home land and fellow American brothers and sisters that must course through one’s veins to risk the ultimate sacrifice in the way our armed servicemen and women do. Your bravery is inspiring to all, and I cannot thank you enough for putting your lives on the line for our benefit. On a similar note, the families of those in the armed forces must be acknowledged for supporting their loved ones on their journeys to serve.
Another group we must thank is all those who have fought for LGBTQ, gender, and racial equality and rights throughout the history of our country. Last year, marriage equality was finally legalized. Earlier, gay men were allowed to serve in the military. In years past, people protested and fought for the rights against workplace discrimination and for affirmative action. We still have a long way to go before true equality is reached, but we would have never gotten as far as we have today without the generations past who knew that their goals would not be realized in their lifetime, but were selfless and passionate enough to dedicate their lives to making our country better for future generations.
Thirdly, Michael Brown, Tariq Gardner, the UCLA sexual assault survivor, and all others who were so wrongly murdered or discriminated against simply due to ignorance, bigotry and hatred. Although you may not know it, your legacy has opened the conversation for topics like police brutality, systemic racism and sexism, and the way our justice system works. You are beautiful people, and you will not have died in vain. You will never, ever be forgotten.
Finally, the teachers, professors, and educators that inspire future generations not only to be future doctors, fellow teachers, artists, musicians, scientists, or whatever they may become, but make them want to learn. So often, teachers are given the shaft and taken for granted, however they are the most valuable asset to society when it comes to assuring our country’s future. All of the world’s greatest leaders, across all fields, got to where they are today because of teachers. No matter how prestigious your job – someone, somewhere, taught you how to do it.
So, this weekend, take some time to reflect on who has helped to shape your life. If you meet a veteran, thank them. If you see or hear of someone being oppressed, be there to support them. Thank your teachers and mentors. Celebrate that which makes our country great – and remember those who made it that way.
