Things To Do Over Spring Break

If you're just staying home, that is.

A lot of students travel during spring break in college. Some just stay home. I go to college in my hometown, so I don't have to travel more than a few miles from school to home. Since I won't be spending hours in a cramped car driving to see my parents, I will be doing several other things that I've been putting off all semester.

Sleeping In

This goes without saying. Although I have several obligations to work on over my break, I will definitely make up time for this one by not turning my alarm on.

Catching Up On Homework

If you're anything like me, you get overwhelmed and need a break sometimes. That break replaces some of the reading that I have to do for my classes. Personally, my break takes place in the form of sleep.

Four of my five classes this semester are reading-intensive. The only one that I've read consistently for is French Literature because the class is too small to get away with not reading. As a literature course, the entire class is centered on the reading. I've neglected some reading for my English Literature class, quite a bit for Modern Philosophy, and most of the reading for French Film. So, over break, I will be catching up on these readings. I suggest the same to all other procrastinators!

Getting Ahead And Studying

After catching up, I plan on getting ahead. I'll be reading ahead for the classes that I previously mentioned, studying the next chapter for my German class, and making more of an effort to get ahead in my French classes and English class. I'll probably try to work on papers that I'll have due after spring break.

Creative Work

Because I will have time, rather than struggling to make time as I do during the semester, I will be able to work on things that I like doing. These things include trying to analyze and understand characters in stories, shows, and movies that I like, as well as trying to create fictional characters in my own writing. Obviously, for me, keeping up with required school work is a major task, so creativity gets put on the back burner pretty quickly.

Playing With My Dogs

This is one thing that I do all year, but that I will definitely have more time for over spring break. Even if I'm not playing with my dogs for the entire time that I'm home, I can still be with them during my entire week out of school. That's a huge bonus for me and I'm sure that it is for them as well.

As of noon on Friday, March 4th, until I go to sleep the night of March 13th, I will be free to enjoy some much needed free time and I will be doing homework without fear of failure. I hope that everyone considers doing the same things, as I believe that most are beneficial and I hope that everyone has a fun and safe spring break.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
