Thousands of college students spend Spring Break on destination vacations, hitting the slopes or the shore and taking totally Instagrammable pics of memorable moments with their best friends. Many journey back to their hometowns, weary after a long semester, pining for the comfort of their bed, their dog, and mom's home-cooking. Few actually remain at school, and those who do are left to roam the empty streets of their college town without purpose or direction. This year, I fall into the last category. Why would I voluntarily spend the most anticipated holiday on the collegiate calendar doing nothing at all? Let me explain.
1. For seven glorious days, I am free from obligations.
There are no classes, campus events, or impending due dates. I can do whatever I want on a whim with no reservations. Do I feel like hot tubbing today? Cool, I can just go, no planning required. Is it more of a sleep-through-everything kind of day? Awesome, that's a totally viable option too, which brings me to my next reason...
2. I need to catch up on sleep.
It's no secret that college is exhausting. Sleeping until noon every day is the only vacation I really need this year.
3. I can stay in my pajamas ALL. DAY. LONG.
No fancy pants for me this week, it's all jammies, all the time.
4. I can finally dive into a good book.
During the semester, I have no desire to read for fun. Homework just takes it out of you, you know? Now I can cozy up on the couch and get a jumpstart on my summer reading list.
5. This is the ideal time for spring cleaning.
Doing housework over Spring Break sounds insane, but hear me out on this one. Free time is scarce when classes are in session and things are bound to get cluttered. The week off gives me an opportunity to start fresh so I can finish out the semester without having to worry about feeling like a tornado tore through my apartment and displaced my belongings and my sanity.
6. March Madness is fast approaching.
A girl's gotta have her college hoops, what can I say? I can watch most of the tournament without feeling guilty about ignoring other responsibilities and that, my friends, is a wonderful thing.
7. I need time to plan healthier meals.
Since I don't have to study for a math test this week, it's time to set aside the pizza, break out my trusty cookbook, and delve into the wonderful world of casseroles. Oh boy.
8. I want to focus on hobbies.
My schedule leaves little time to do some of the things I love most. Maybe this week I can finally finish painting that canvas for my living room that I started back in September…
9. It's time to catch up on the newest flicks.
Okay, so they're not so new anymore, but they're new to me because I still haven't seen any of the critically acclaimed movies that were released in the last two months. I look forward to kicking back at the theater and finally seeing what all the buzz is about.
10. I'm saving money.
Who doesn’t love to save, honestly? While everyone else is living it up in paradise, I'm living vicariously through their Instagram pictures and planning exciting adventures for the summer.
11. I need to recharge.
All of these activities fall under the broader category of treating myself. I'm going to do all of the things that I've needed and wanted to do all semester. All the possible ways to spend the week result in me checking something off my to-do list in some way or another. Even if I don't do a single thing on this list except sleep all week, I'll still have quiet time to myself to rejuvenate and mentally prepare for the final weeks of the semester, so I guess I'm not really doing nothing after all.
However you're spending it this year, have a safe and fun break!
