Since January, the meaning of the word "family" has changed in my vocabulary and I couldn't be happier about it. I've realized that word isn't just handed out to anyone. My Big, GBig and GG have become my go-to people. Now, during the summer months, they're not living right across the street. It's difficult not having them close by, but the family bond is still strong. There are so many things that get taken for granted, especially in a caring, loving family line, here are just a few:
Family Dinners
Once a week, every week. It's time to catch up on news that was too big for a text message. Before you know it, you're still sitting in the dinning hall two hours later. You realize these meals mean so much when summer comes around and you're eating leftovers with your parents.
The GM
When a notification pops up from your group message titled "Family," you know there is something worth reading. It could be a text with big news, or a small "I miss you guys." The great thing about a group message is that you can use it whenever, whether you're all within a mile of each other, or living in different states.
Taking Family Photos
You can only do the sorority squat when you're with your family line, and you can always get creative. But not too creative; don't try to do it alone. It would just be weird if you were squatting in the middle of a picture with your cousins at the beach.
Wiping Each Others' Tears
It might be hard to keep a smile on your face and say "everything will be okay" while dealing with waterworks, but when the roles are switched, you'll need them to be there for you too. No one understands you better than they do. It's good to let it out, because when you finally catch your breath and stop bawling, you look up to see their comforting faces.
Advice, Both Giving and Receiving
Whether you're wise and older, or younger and need help, your sorority family is always there to turn to. A breakup, a fight with your best friend, a job offer—they are there to help you get back on your feet and jump head-first into whatever your goals may be. Your family at home supports you, and so does your sorority family line. Appreciate every moment they put you before themselves.
The Oldest One Around
Every family has one who will leave. It could be your Big, your GBig, your GG, etc. Even if you go through formal recruitment in the spring, and they graduate a few months later, you will get attached. They are the one you and the rest of your family line look up to. They have been through it all and have all the answers. They talk about graduating and leaving school to begin their life in the real world, but you don't think it's real until it happens.
Don't just love them, tell them you love them. And appreciate their love.
