This idea of being a "not sorority" sorority girl is something that's been around for awhile now. Used by sorority girls across the nation, it's a term to describe the girls who don't see themselves as the "typical sorority girl." Here's the thing though, this idea really only exists on a surface level.
I'll be the first to admit that I've described myself using this term. However, when one of our advisors brought it up during work week, she turned the idea on its head for me. I was never really one of those girly-girls; I wear chapstick instead of lipgloss, you're more likely to find me playing sports than planning outfits, and when college rolled around, and the idea of recruitment was presented to me, I was unsure. The thing is however, if you look past the stereotypical, Lilly-wearing, Kate Spade-toting sorority girl, you'll find in each house and within each girl some of the same basic characteristics that drove me to go Greek. Our appearances vary from girl to girl, but within each one of us is ambition, compassion, intelligence, and so many more characteristics that set us apart from the idea of a "typical sorority girl."
So to every girl who has ever considered herself as the "not sorority" sorority girl, remember what drove you to choose Greek life. You didn't choose your house because of the outfits the girls wear or how they do their hair, you chose that house because you saw within those girls the kind of woman you wanted to be. You should be proud to be a "sorority girl," because some of the strongest, most incredible women I know are sorority girls. It's time to throw out the idea of the "not sorority" sorority girls and embrace who you are.
