I Am Tired Of Sorority Stereotypes

"I can't believe you joined a sorority" is my least favorite sentence ever.

I Am Tired Of Sorority Stereotypes

When people think of sororities, they usually think about a group of girls that all dress the same and chant about different signs and colors. These are the girls that have to pay for friendship. They all think that they are all that and they are always the best dressed. The members always have smiles on their face because they just went to paint canvases together. They are usually the dumbest girls on campus since they only worry about going to frat parties.

It might be true that we have chants that we are proud to sing, or that we truly did not learn how fun it is to paint canvases until joining a sorority, but it is not true that we are dumb or think we are better than everyone. I am tired listening to the stereotypes of sororities, because that is all they are, stereotypes.

"Sorority girls are so stupid." Sorority girls usually have the best GPAs on campus. When going through, there is a certain GPA required to even be allowed to go in to the parties. After girls are allowed to join the sorority, there are grade checks every so often. Grade checks that improve our grades if we are having difficulties. We have required study hours, making sure that we have set time to make school first. School always comes first while being in a sorority, always. Without doing well in school, you are not even able to go to social events. So next time you are in class, look for a sorority girl, she might be a good study buddy.

"Sororities are just paid friendships." I did not join a sorority to pay for friendship. Trust me, it is a lot cheaper to meet friends in class. People may think that sorority girls only hangout with others in their sorority, but that is not true. I have plenty of friends that are outside of my sorority that mean as much to me as my sisters do. Joining a sorority allowed me to be able to find girls that have the same interests as me which helped me build a friendship off of that. I did not sign up for friendship, I signed up for sisterhood. Sisterhood is for life, some friendships might not be. When being in a sorority, friends become sisters, which means that they become family, which you do not pay for.

"Sorority girls think they are better than everyone else." When I took the pledge to be apart of my organization, it did not say that I am now better than everyone else on campus, or even in my home town. I took the pledge that I said I was going to help those in need and to be nice to others. My favorite part of the year is when we get to travel to our philanthropy and stand out on the highway and clean up trash. I should not be thought of being better than others for doing something I love, which is helping others. We stand tall because we know that we are going to make a difference in the world. That is something to be proud of.

We are the girls with the smiles on our faces. We are the girls that are going to get chants stuck in our head because we just practiced them for an hour. We are the girls that are going to dress the same because we want to make the best impression as we can. We are the girls that spend hours painting our letters all over canvases since we have pride in our organization.

We are the girls that spend extra hours studying because we want to ace that test. We are the girls that hold our heads up tall since we just donated one thousand dollars to our philanthropy. We are the girls that should not be frowned upon from society. We are the girls that are going to change society.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
