Far too often do we hear stories about the negatives in the world: how the world is filled with selfish, heartless people. I cannot deny this and never will. There are many stories I hear and read that leave me questioning certain individuals. But that is just it, individuals. Single people or even a small group of people. Not, and I repeat not, all people. That is where people get confused. The news is filled with negative, sickening stories. Over and over we hear depressing stories that seem to be the only news that reaches our ears, never the positives. Never the news about the people doing good in the world. It is crazy when you think about it, really. The little positive things people do every day, the little things, would never make a news story. The news shows the negatives, the problems. That is what captures people’s attention, and that is what gets the views, which gets the ratings. But you know, in this world that likes to focus on the bad, we should all focus on the good. There is so much good in the world, and it's important one sees that.
Domestic violence, self-harm, and human trafficking. These are all awful crimes, a negative feature of the world we live in, and one that cannot be solved. As much as awareness and help is offered for victims, it sadly continues to happen. Although these crimes do continue to happen, something can be done to boost the confidence of victims. For example, to let victims know they are not their scars, a tattoo artist in Toledo, Ohio is covering up individuals' scars, free of charge, to help them move on with their lives. On his days off, he schedules appointments with anyone that needs his help. Takes time out of his day to help others see themselves as more than just their scars.
A child born with a rare form of dwarfism that needs to be on oxygen at all times has been in and out of the hospital his entire life. His 13th birthday was quickly approaching, and he decided he did not need any presents; he wanted to help others. He held his birthday party at a local theater and with the help of a GoFundMe raised $14,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network. The money this young man raised will go toward proper medical equipment, games, and toys for other patients to play with in order to keep them busy, in order for them to focus on being kids. Although this young man is in a position that is hard to imagine, he is helping others in any way he can.
Two stories. Two small instances of people being selfless and showing all the good in the world. Imagine, imagine if others would look more to the positive, look at the good. One can easily be caught up in the negative and turn into negative people themselves, and view the world as a whole as negative. But that’s not the case. We all need to focus on the good and realize there is so much more going on in the world then the few big stories we hear in the media. The world is filled with good; do not be afraid to find it and be it.
