Have you ever been asked, “If you could live off of one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?” Well, I always found this question to be extremely difficult. Partially because I love most foods and obsess over all desserts. So how could I choose just one category?
My immediate reaction to this question was “oh, Italian food for sure,” but then today, something monumental happened. I bit into a piece of deep fried bread. Yes, a breadstick that was deep fried. If your mouth is not watering right now, this may not be the article for you.
So, what did I realize in that glorious moment that I shared with my breadstick? It occurred to me then that bread is actually the food I could live off of.
Bread can be used to make so much more than just toast or be eaten plain. Bread can also be easily transported or transformed into a deluxe treat. Bread can fill you up or give you a little tease of what is to come. We often come across this glorious food several times in just one meal!
Bread is so much more than just a plain or simple food. Not to mention the various types of bread! There's whole wheat, grain, white, bagels, buns, and cornbread just to name a few. Don’t even get me started on the different cuisines that bread is a part of (one of my personal favorites being Naan, a part of Indian food)! Clearly, bread has many different forms.
So why else should bread be the food that you can live off of for the rest of your life? Did you know that you can make cheesy garlic bread or french toast or pizza all from this glorious common food, bread? Not to mention the easy transportation of items such as sandwiches. I mean, if you’re in a rush just wrap one up and pop it in your bag. Or, if you are in a mood to slow down and and cozy up by the warm fireplace while watching a movie you could make super French onion soup with cheesy bread. Not to mention that you can decide the quality of a restaurant off of their bread. Is it warm? Smushy? Soggy? A popover?
Finally, bread can save your life. If you are feeling maybe a little lightheaded or too drunk, what should your solution be? Bread.
Bread is truly your best friends; it is always accessible, and you can leave it at home or take it out for a wild night in the town. You can make a huge meal or a little snack, and you can always find the comfort of bread in whatever part of the world you are. So, next time you are asked what food you could live off, think about it. Think of the warm gooey dough melting in your mouth, and answer, “Bread, of course!”
