For the last several months, I have been planning a surprise party. I must say, despite it being a small, very low key event, it's been quite a process planning all of the small details that make a party special.
While this party will be under thirty guests, I can't even begin to imagine what planning an event for a hundred or more guests would be like. I now understand why couples planning weddings and wedding planners are always so stressed.
First, there's the venue. Then, there's the food, drinks and of course you can't forget about dessert. After that, you have to determine if you want the food served buffet style or table service. Finally, the giveaways. I thought, since it's a surprise party, it would be cute to give away little "surprise bags" with a different gift inside each one of them to surprise the guests as they open them.
I have several friends planning weddings for 2017. They were telling me that some of the most exciting aspects of planning a wedding are checking out different venue spots and sampling the different foods. I definitely would not call those the most exciting aspects in terms of party planning but I may have a different opinion when I am planning a wedding of my own.
I am getting my surprise party's food catered from a well known local restaurant chain. I am happy that the restaurant is a very allergy friendly place as my mother, myself and several other guests have food allergies. Since I am bringing the drinks and desserts, I am left figuring out how many and of what drinks to get. How many people will want wine instead of beer? How many people will want regular soda instead of diet? What types of desserts will people like? Will they want a traditional cake or more a more healthy option like fruit?
In the end, I know everyone is coming to celebrate the surprise anniversary. All of the guests love and cherish the couple celebrating their anniversary. I really do appreciate that all of the guests are taking time out of their busy lives to celebrate this milestone with us.
