In the English language, several words have multiple meanings, such as the word 'post.' But there is one word though that will always have one clear meaning: the word 'NO.'
We've all heard it since we were small, like when we asked if we could have a cookie before dinner, and the answer was no. Or at school, when we were told no running in the halls or no chewing gum in class. No matter what context or language you put it in, no means no.
Unfortunately, some people don't know how to take 'no' for an answer. In the dating world, it's a very big problem. If someone asks you for a date but you're not interested, you should just be able to say 'no' and be on your way, right?
Well, in an ideal world, that would be the case. Unfortunately, some people just cannot stand to be told no. These people often turn into stalkers, or at the very least, unfriendly and downright nasty people. But why? Since when does the world revolve around them?
There is the fact that some people are just used to getting what they want all the time. It usually starts at home, where they are spoiled, starting with when they're born. Our culture is full of enabler parents who want to pamper their child with every luxury they could ever want. However, this kind of spoiling can have very serious consequences. One such consequence is that the child will grow to be ungrateful and expect to be handed whatever they want. When they are told the magic word 'no,' they have no idea how to handle it.
Also, some people aren't used to hearing the word no when it comes to dating. There are those men and women out there who have never been turned down for a date before. So when someone finally tells them 'no,' it's like they're being spoken to in a foreign language.
Sometimes, people have a hard time saying 'no.' Mostly it's because they don't want to come off as mean or hurtful, but we're taught very early on that it's okay to say no.
If you're uncomfortable with doing something, saying no to it shouldn't be a problem. But sometimes people will be so insistent that it becomes harder to tell them no. It can become especially difficult when they give you the sad eyes and a quivering lip.
But it's perfectly fine to say no, in fact, nothing should ever stop you from doing so. If someone tries to make you feel bad because you don't want to do something, that's their problem, not yours.
Friends, dates, and spouses should understand that when you say "no," the subject should be dropped, and that's the end of that. You should never feel pressured into doing something, you are free and capable of making your own choices.
Just remember that no means no.
