Are you a '90s baby? Were you born in the early 2000s? Were you born in the mid 2000s? Who cares! No matter when you were born I am sure that you know these songs. You know, the most popular hip hop and R&B, rock, and pop songs that are on your "classic hip hop" playlist on Pandora or your "time to dance around my room like a lunatic" playlist on Spotify? Yeah those songs. This is the ultimate playlist of those songs. Get your phone ready.
Thank you to Google for helping me out here. These are in no particular order.
1. Wannabe--Spice Girls (1996)
Don'tcha wannabe my lover? Nah? That's okay, we can just kick it with the Spice Girls and watch them dance around the hotel instead. I like that idea better.
2. MMMBop--Hanson (1997)
I never know what these boys are saying, but they had great hair, so I was all for it.
3. Barbie Girl--Aqua (1997)
All I can say is, sorry to all of you blonde's out there that had this song attached to your name since it came out. I'm also sad to say that I was one of those girls. But it's okay, because Ken is serenading me with his shockingly low voice for a doll.
4. Backstreet's Back--Backstreet Boys (1997)
Are you original? Yeah. Are you the only one? Yeah. You know what comes next.
5. C'est La Vie--B*Witched (1998)
For anyone who is totally obsessed with old Disney Channel Original Movies, you will love me for this. You also better know the movie it's from. (In case you don't remember, it's in "Smart House".)
6. All Star--Smash Mouth (1998)
Thank you "Shrek", sincerely those who had no idea "Smash Mouth" was a thing until a stinky ogre and yappy donkey appeared on the screen in front of us.
7. Baby One More Time--Britney Spears (1999)
Oh baby, baby, how was I supposed to know...that this song was going to be a major hit? Like come on seriously.
8. Genie In A Bottle--Christina Aguilera (1999)
This song is better in Spanish, but like the English version is just as good. If you have time please look at all of Christina's old songs, you will be thoroughly impressed, but also depressed that she doesn't have much to do with music anymore.
9. Say My Name--Destiny's Child (1999)
You actin' kinda shady, ain't callin' me baby, why the sudden change? This was pre-"Cheetah Girls" for me. I LIVED for Destiny's Child.
10. No Scrubs--TLC (1999)
A scrub is a guy that can't get no love from me. Basically the same as number nine. They were my queens.
11. I Want It That Way--Backstreet Boys (1999)
If you weren't like two or three and dancing around to this in your Pull-Up and only your Pull-Up, we obviously cannot get along.
12. I'm Like A Bird--Nelly Furtado (2000)
This isn't everyone's favorite, I always lose it, then find it again when it comes up on a playlist, and then I can't get it out of my head. Ever.
13. Bye Bye Bye--'N Sync (2000)
I see you doing the hand motions. Don't act like I don't know what's going on here.
14. Ride Wit Me--Nelly ft. St. Lunatics (2000)
If you have a brother like mine, this is what you got used to listening to as a child. I know you're all dancing to this and bopping to the beat in your head right now.
15. Tipsy--J-Kwon (2001)
Yo I got a fake ID though. Just kidding. I don't, but like this song makes people feel like they should, even if they are of age.
16. Ridin'--Chamillionaire (2001)
They see me rollin', they hatin'.
17. What's Luv--Fat Joe ft. Ashanti (2001)
If you remember this song during childhood (the clean version) I highly suggest that you do not look up the explicit version, it ruins your childhood.
18. Work It--Missy Elliot (2002)
I couldn't have a list of ultimate '90s and early 2000s without Missy Elliot in it at least once. It just had to happen. Plus Allyson Stoner from Disney Channel Originals like "Suite Life of Zach and Cody" and "Camp Rock" is a dancer in it. Is it worth it? Lemme work it.
19. Hot In Here--Nelly (2002)
Remember when we all used to sing this like "it's so hot in here, but I'm gunna keep all my clothes on" because if you sang it the other way your parents would yell at you? Good times.
20. Get Low--Lil Jon and The East Side Boyz (2002)
From the window, to the wall. Till the all the bad words we weren't supposed to say but the beat was so good we had to dance to it as appropriately as possible.
EXTRAS
In Da Club--50 Cent (2003)
Ignition(remix)--R. Kelly (2003)
These are some extra jams. they are just as good, but like I didn't want to continue going on forever. I totally could though.
I sincerely hope that you were jamming to these songs in your head or out loud as you were reading this article. If you didn't, shame on you. Please take the time to get your group of friends together, look at this playlist, and dance around your room to these songs. If you don't have any friends, or feel like being alone, do the same thing, just to the beat of your own drum. Have fun!
