Just because I'm an introvert does not mean that I'm antisocial. Being an introvert in the eyes of society is someone who is rude, antisocial, shy, stuck up, or a bitch. But, that's simply not true. Being an introvert is being independent. Being an introvert is being able to listen well. Being an introvert is being able to absorb large amounts of information.
I am an introvert, I enjoy being alone. But, just because I enjoy being alone, does not mean that I always am alone. I have friends, I have family, and I have sorority sisters. I spend most of my time with people—in class, at work, or at my sorority events. So, when I do have free time, I enjoy spending it alone. Being alone in my own thoughts is something that I look forward to at the end of the day. It allows me to think about life, my future, my past, and everything in-between. Being an introvert, I'm frowned upon by society. I'm the minority of societal behaviors. I'm looked at as a "fly on the wall," the girl who listens more than she speaks. I'm (more often than not) forgotten about in any given situation where there are large numbers of people. Because of my tendency to stay quiet and listen well, I am a book of secrets, and not just my own. Most people are able to speak their minds at any given time, express how they feel, and talk to just about anyone. And although i can do that, I choose not to. I personally believe that my own opinions and thoughts are not contributing factors to society, therefore i choose to let everyone else speak, and I listen to what they have to say. Now, that doesn't mean that if I believe strongly about something then I'll just sit on the sidelines, because I do have a voice. I just pick and choose when I want to use it.
Being an introvert gives me the freedom of not feeling stupid going to dinner at a fancy restaurant by myself, or reading a book at Starbucks, or seeing a movie at the theater. Introverts tend to stay in on the weekends. They enjoy having time for themselves, and they don't always like being in big crowds. Extroverts surround themselves with people so they don't have to be alone whenever they choose to go somewhere or do something. Introverts are perfectly happy doing things on their own. One thing that I really am hoping to do after college is travel. I want to see the world, and I have the opportunity to jump on a plane to Greece, or Italy, or Spain, I will. Because I have the power and the freedom to do whatever I want, whenever I want to.
Introverts choose who they connect with very carefully. They want a friendship that is going to last, a relationship that is more than a waste of time. I, personally, take a very long time until I'm able to trust someone fully, and that's not because I think they're a bad person, or don't earn my trust, I just don't want that trust to be broken too soon. The longer I wait to open up to people, the more comfortable I feel opening up to that specific person. It all comes down to who introverts are willing to trust; they will not share their problems with just anyone, it has to be someone who has been involved in their life for a significant amount of time, and who we know we can trust based on that time.
I am not antisocial, and I am not rude. I am simply an introvert.
