It has been a little over a month since I, along with thousands of others, have graduated college. It still seems so unreal. I used to think I would have my life figured out and I would be ready to face anything. I thought maybe I would have a job right off the bat, but I was wrong. There are instances where panic rushes over me because I have no solidified plan. I have no idea what I'm going to be doing in the next few months. Yes, it is scary. Yes, I have cried. And yes, I have thought to myself, "What am I going to do?" Despite these thoughts and a whirlwind of emotions, I have learned not to be afraid of the unknown.
Let's face it, there are many of us who dream of having the perfect life right after college, getting a "big girl/big boy job", moving to a new place, and starting fresh. But for those of us who are still a little lost, I'm letting you know that it's okay. It's normal not to know exactly where you want to go or what you want to do in life. The world is gigantic, and with so many possibilities, how can we decide right away?
While you are still figuring things out, take this time to find yourself, your desires, and what matters most to you so your dreams can come true. Use this time to position yourself a step closer in the right direction to the right people and closer to opportunities to get your foot in the door. Like I said before, take this time for yourself. You just spent four years dedicating your life and half your soul to earning that college degree. Take some 'you' time to enjoy life a little. Take that trip you haven't had time to go on, reconnect with friends you've lost touch with, take time to visit your family (who have always been by your side), and lastly, go to your favorite spot and read a good book, relax, write, and think about anything.
Don’t worry, you will be working that nine-to-five job for years, so while you have this window of freedom, take it in with open arms. There is no shame; it will help you figure out how you want to spend the rest of your life. It's not about how quickly you get a job or start 'adulting'; it's about how you spend your time helping yourself reach your goals. You’re an adult for the rest of your life, so don't feel like you have to jump right in. Take a moment to step back and just breathe. I promise you, it will be okay. You will get to where you want to be one day, but it just takes some time.
Everyone is trying to find their place in this world. Each day that you’re figuring things out isn't wasted time; it's enhancing yourself to become great. Take it one day at a time and enjoy the adventure that awaits. Close your eyes and picture where you want to be and go get there! I used to be afraid of the unknown but have come to realize that it is not what's not in front of me that's holding me back, but myself that's holding me back. Remember, "not all those who wander are lost." We all choose different paths and none are wrong, and none are the same. Life is about the journey, not necessarily the destination. Not knowing exactly where you're going can without a doubt be terrifying, but face it head on with nothing to lose and trust me, you'll go far.
