Life as an English major and Communication minor always results in a few questions.
1. So what do you want to do with that?
2. Do you want to be a teacher?
3. Will you edit my paper?
Regardless of your major, whether you are undecided, finance, history, or even Spanish it's ok to be a little in the mix about what you want to do. Why should we have to know? Life is a series of moments and each moment helps us learn about ourselves a little bit more and patches up another piece of our puzzle.
As young college students with our whole lives ahead of us, we do not need a set plan. We all hold the idea that we will have a great job out of college, live in an awesome apartment, and hopefully get into the grad school of our choosing. Of course, this is what we should aim for just like anyone would! But remember, if life falls a little off of your set path it's more than ok.
Take a breath and think. Everything that happens to us regarding our future selves and future careers does so in order to enlighten us about we should be doing. I myself hold this painted picture of what my life will be like, will it be? Probably not.
Look around you and you will see that some people's goals are different from your own. Accept this. We are different from every single person on this earth. Never feel pressured to want the traditional things and events life has to offer us. Tradition both helps and hinders us. It helps us in the fact that we know what to expect, but it hurts us in the fact that we don't search out for new beginnings or new knowledge regarding our lifestyles.
Create your own path. Think of going on a roller coaster. At one point, we were all a little nervous to go on the one's that went upside down, now we love it. The thrill, the excitement, looking down on the small world that lays at our feet.
Don't be afraid to undergo or create a few twists or turns in your path because you will always take something from it. It may be good and it may be bad but every situation that is presented in front us we have the opportunity to grow, to learn, to admire, and to appreciate.
There is no set way to life your life, it just takes a little bit of reflection and acceptance to realize that. Seek out new experiences as often as you can. Take trips you never planned for, spend more money than you can afford, take a road trip home at 12 am on a Wednesday night if you miss your dog like I know I do.
Find opportunities to help you discover who you are and who you want to be.Don't give up on the goals that you have for yourself, just remember there is more than one way of getting there and there is more to life than having a plan. Live a little, you might trip once or twice, but you can get back up.
