An Open Letter to the Roommate I Won't Be Rooming with Next Semester

To The One I'll Miss The Most

To the roommate I'm not rooming with next semester:

Thank you.

Thank you for all of the amazing times we've had together in our dorm. Thank you for all of our late night talks, silly questions, stressful study sessions, encouraging Bible studies, and movie watching dates. Thank you for being quiet when I needed to study, loud when I needed to forget about my stresses for a couple hours, and comforting when I needed someone to talk to. Thank you for being the roommate I needed this year.

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry for all of the times I forgot to do something that might have annoyed you, the times I ate or drank something you might have wanted, and the times I wasn't there when you needed me. I'm sorry for the times I should've taken out the trash, the times I should've made my bed, or the times I left the door unlocked. Above all, I'm sorry for any times I failed to show how much I appreciate you and all of the things you've helped me with.

I'm going to miss you.

I'm going to miss our late night confessions of fears, hopes, and dreams. I'm going to miss singing and dancing around the room to songs we loved in middle school. I'm going to miss the every day things of getting to do life with you. I'll miss hearing your alarm go off three times until you finally wake up (okay, maybe not too much), and I'll miss playing our favorite music and hearing you hum while we study. I'm going to miss having you as my 24/7 college friend.

You will always be my friend.

Just because you won't be living in the same room as me, doesn't mean that you won't still be one of my closest friends. We will still go out for Zaxby's runs when we are tired of the caf. We will still drive out to Starbucks when we want to study off campus. We will still have movie nights where we can watch sappy romantic films and enjoy life. We will still be great friends next year.

Finally, I want you to know that I will never forget you.

I will never forget all of the amazing times we have had together this year and all of the college things we've gotten to do together. I will never forget our tiny decorated room and the fun times we've had there. I will never forget how much you mean to me and how much of my success this year I owe to you. My memories from this year will be with me throughout college and even after.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

The best superpower ever? Being invisible of course. Imagine just being able to go from seen to unseen on a dime. Who wouldn't want to have the opportunity to be invisible? Superman and Batman have nothing on being invisible with their superhero abilities. Here are some things that you could do while being invisible, because being invisible can benefit your social life too.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
