It is a strange thing we do deciding what we want to do for our entire life by choosing our college major. It is especially strange to think about considering that we make this important decision at the age of 17 or 18 right when we enter college. It seems as though society forces us into thinking that is “normalcy.”
When I finished high school I knew what I liked and what I didn’t like, but I clearly didn’t have a full answer for what I wanted my academic focus to be. I liked theater, communication, media, film, writing, and music. I went into college as a communication studies major because it made sense at the time for me. I didn’t truly know what to expect. I very much enjoyed the exercises in my major where we got to write. I also very much enjoyed the class I decided to take for my artistic inquiry — "Introduction to Creative Writing."
I have written my whole life. I have always loved poetry, short stories, and novels, but I hadn't considered a career in writing before entering college. I am so glad that I took a chance during my sophomore year and decided to change my major to creative writing. I am also thankful that my Introduction to Creative Writing professor gave me such an inspiring class experience because I can’t imagine my college career going any other way. Here are a few things that I took into consideration before changing my major; maybe they can help you too!
First, if you want to change your major, ask people that are already in the program about their experience. Also, don’t allow any outside pressure to sway you one way or another. It is your life and your education, so make the decision for yourself. Try to picture yourself in that career field, then weigh out your options based on that.
Also, ask yourself, "Do you have time to change your major?" If you are already half way through your major requirements, it can be hard to take on an entirely new set of classes to take. In this case, maybe look into adding it on as a minor. Lastly, they say the grass is always greener on the other side, but you’ll never know until you go see it for yourself. Take a class or two in the major you want to change to before making your final decision.
