To the High School Senior

It's perfectly normal that you don't know exactly what you want to do with the rest of your life, at 17 years old.

Dear seniors,

As you sit in your last semester of classes, stressed about the little bit of time you have before you graduate, remember to take a second and just breathe. Take it all in. Take advantage of every last sporting event, dance, and party with your friends. Before you know it, it will be graduation day and you'll be going your separate ways.

There is so much to do and so much to take advantage of during your last few months at home. So, stay out late with your friends for fun even when you just want to lay in bed and watch Netflix all night. However, be sure to not neglect your family in the mean time. I know in the moment, it seems so easy to blow off your mom but trust me, you'll be missing her as you lay in your dorm room after a tough day in college. Try and squeeze in as much time as you can with her because before you know it, everything will be changing whether you're ready or not. We can't stop time but we can make the most of the time we have.

If you play a sport, don't miss a practice your senior year. Believe me, I would give anything for one last practice and game with my team that became my family over the years. One last tournament with some of the people that have had the biggest impact on my life is all that I want.

With college and choosing the right one comes a lot of financial stress as well. However, the truth of the matter is, all of us aren't lucky enough to make it out debt free. Choose the school that feels like home and make it work. You won't be able to get the next four years of your life back. Be sure to make it worth while. Whatever you do, don't settle for someone else's idea of perfect. This is probably your first decision as an adult, create your lifetime goals and get out there to conquer them. That being said, don't work too much. You're going to be working for the rest of your life so take it easy and spend time with friends and family. Don't be that friend constantly saying, "I can't, I have work."

Now, don't take this the wrong way, I absolutely love college. The opportunities that I have already been presented with in this short amount of time is truly incredible. However, I just want to remind you that one day, you're going to wish you could rewind time just for a little bit. Senior year, even though it's crazy, is really your last time to be a kid, live it up.

P.S. If you don't know what you want to do with the rest of your life- that is completely normal and okay! Stop stressing the things you don't know yet, it will all fall into place.

Best of luck,

A college freshman

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
