I love my family more than anything and wouldn’t trade them for the world, but sometimes I find myself wishing I had a sister. I watch movies and shows, or see the relationship my friends and cousins have with their sisters and can’t help but become a little jealous. I always wanted to be able to feel that special bond that girls share when they’re sisters.
And then one day I realized I do have that special bond. She might not be blood related to me, but that doesn’t mean she isn't my sister. Because a sister to me means more than being born from the same parents.
A sister is someone you can tell anything to. You can tell them about what happened in your class that day or how that hot boy finally texted you back. You can call or text her any hour of the day and night to vent about how you’re still not over the douchebag that broke your heart. Or how annoying your parents have been. Or how stressed out you are over school, where you both support that dropping out and marrying someone rich is the better option.
A sister is someone you can count on with anything. You know you can trust them not to tell a single soul with all of your deepest secrets. And when someone tells you something that you swear not tell to anyone else, your sister is the only exception to that promise.
A sister is someone who supports you. You could be making the dumbest decisions of your life, going back to that same boy you know you shouldn’t and even though she’s told you a thousand times not to, she’ll still be there when he breaks your heart again. She’ll still let you cry on her shoulder throughout the night and make those late night ice cream runs.
A sister is someone who you can share all your clothes with. You walk into her room and see about half of your wardrobe thrown on the floor but can’t say a single thing because you know more than half of hers is hanging in your closet.
A sister is someone who does your hair and make-up before going out to every party. She’ll spend over an hour doing your hair and only leave herself twenty minutes to frantically get beautified.
A sister is someone you can totally be yourself around. You act like complete goofs around each other and some might consider you guys a little too comfortable. Your inside jokes are endless and sometimes you don’t have to say a thing out loud to have a conversation.
A sister is someone who is your family. She just barges into your house like it’s hers and knows the garage code to get in even when you’re not there. Your family is hers and hers is yours. Every family party and gathering, you both attend together.
A sister is your best friend. She will be the one calming you down on your wedding day, just before you walk down the aisle. She will be the one you ask to be your child’s godparent. She is and will always be the one at your side through good times and bad.
My parents might not have given birth to another daughter for me to have a sister, but thanks to you it still kind of feels like I do and for that, I will forever be grateful.
