There are friends and then there are best friends. They are the people that walk into your life that make a huge impact. These people are your best friends. Webster’s definition of friend is “a person who helps or supports someone.” However I think there is a much deeper meaning than that. I feel as though our best friends are our soul mates that we should love, cherish, and make promises to. Being a friend is not just something that you should be able to choose on the fly when you feel like it, it should be a full time commitment.
As a best friend I promise... to love you even when you’re stupid. There are only two groups of people who should be able to tell you when and if you’re being stupid. Those people are your parents and your best friends. I promise to always tell you that going back to the same guy you always do, is you being stupid. Or the fact that you would rather go out and party instead of studying is you being incredibly stupid. Telling you you’re being stupid is not meant to be rude but rather that strong punch to the mouth that wakes you up from your destructive behavior.
As a best friend I promise…to give you my honest opinion on your outfit. Whether I really love it or really dislike it I promise to always tell you the honest truth before you leave the house. I promise to always make sure your outfit is flawless when we go to the bar because I want guys to offer to buy you drinks. And tell you when that shirt is ehhh… not appropriate for a dinner date. I promise to help you pick out your prom dress or be there for you when you say yes to that wedding dress. Trust me, I’m not critiquing your outfit to be mean but rather I am doing so because I want you to look like the flawless human being that you are.
As a best friend I promise… that if you’re going down I am too. The amount of times I’ve kept you out of trouble is countless. There have been quite a few moments where I’ve thought to myself that you’re lucky I’m sober and/or actually have makeup on today. I’ve talked us out of many sticky situations; you’re welcome for that by the way. However I will play mother duck any day for you.
As a best friend I promise… to have hung-over brunch with you. Yes you probably influenced me to be this hung-over because you always do. And yes you probably made me swear off drinking ever again. However I promise to always have hung-overly brunch with you. Whether it is Waffle House or some cute down the street brunch place, I promise to always clear up that sickly feeling with us stuffing our faces.
As a best friend I promise… to always have embarrassing car jam sessions. Bottom line we are ugly. We have probably ended up on someone’s Snap Chat story because we like to dance to Justin Bieber’s new song “What Do You Mean.” I have no regrets.
As a best friend I promise… to obsess about the same bands with you. We have had our Jonas Brothers days to our One Direction days. Every obsession is not as embarrassing, but can come pretty close. But what would friendship be without out three-hour car rides to see your favorite band?
As a best friend I promise… to not be hurt when you have a new boyfriend. It can be easy when someone has a new boy to feel abandoned. However as a best friend, you have to know that once the honey moon faze dies down, they will spend just as much time with you as they did before. This is a part of life that friendships often become tried with. It can often be hard to over look the fact that you can no longer call them up at any spur of the moment to hang out. Yes, this sucks and yes this can be hard, because it is part of growing up. You have to be able to say "I am happy that you are happy."
As a best friend I promise… to love you unconditionally. I would love to say that there haven’t been moments in time that have tried our friendship, however that would be a lie and you know that. I am sure that you can recall those moments quite vividly. However, I can honestly say that no matter what, I still love you. You are my other half. Or as "Grey’s Anatomy" puts it: you are my person. You are the Christina to my Meredith and the peanut butter to my jelly. We both make mistakes but part of being a best friend is over looking it and saying I love you even though you’re sometimes stupid.
