Just 24 hours after the inauguration of Donald Trump, millions of Americans refused to stay silent and took to the streets to make their voices heard loud and clear. Women, men, and children of all backgrounds came together in major and minor cities to ensure the new and uncertain presidential administration heard them.
Standing amongst a crowd of strong, "nasty women" was one of the proudest moments of my life. Despite the unwanted outcome of the election, people everywhere showed their hope and motivation to make a change in the upcoming years. This ability to come together despite the circumstances is a true representation of the American spirit of persistence.
The Women's March in Washington, as well as many other cities across the country and the world, is just the beginning of the fight back. Within the first week of Trump's presidency, marches for taxes, LGBTQ, and climate issues have been announced. It has become evident that the people fighting the good fight will not be silent in the upcoming months.
Being that a lot of unfavorable decisions have been made in the past few days concerning the climate, women's rights, and immigrant's rights, people are more motivated than ever to ensure the voices of those being hurt are not being silenced. In recent weeks it has become the task of American citizens to raise their voices for those that are no longer able to. This task is more important than ever.
So what can we do? One of the simplest and most efficient ways in which we can do something about the new injustices that are to come under the new administration is contacting your legislators. Calling your legislator carries an immense amount of weight and ensures that your voice is quite literally heard. Calling 202-225-3121 will bring you to the House of Representatives switchboard, from which you can be connected to your representative's office. Additionally, donating to organizations like Planned Parenthood, Sierra Club, and the Human Rights Watch will directly help those in jeopardy of being hurt by the new administration.
The fight back is being loud, unapologetic and brave. The fight back won't be easy and it won't be short-lived, but know that it will not be fought alone. Millions of Americans made up of "nasty women, immigrants, Muslims, and countless other beautiful minorities feel the same way and are willing to fight until voices are heard and change is made.
