The Do's and Don'ts of Life at Franklin College

Because you’re new here at Franklin College, you have yet to learn the ins and outs of life on this small campus, which could cause you to panic, but there’s not need. Let me help you out.

1. DON’T go home every weekend.

It’s going to be hard to leave home for the first time, but please, please, please don’t go home every single chance you get. You will only be hurting yourself if you do because you never know what you will miss out on. Franklin College has many fun events that often occur on the weekends, and if you go home, you miss these opportunities. Also, you will miss out on opportunities to meet new people, study in groups, or just enjoy what the town of Franklin has to offer.

2. DON’T get caught up in partying.

I absolutely expect you to let loose and have fun during your time here at Franklin College, but not too much. A lot of freshmen allow themselves to get caught up in the party scene and their grades suffer because of it. So please, make your grades your top priority, because after all, that is why you are here in the first place, to learn.

3. DON’T eat out every meal.

It’s no secret that Saga food is not the greatest. However, eating out every meal will not only use up the little money you have, it will also increase your chances of gaining the “Freshmen 15.” Be wise with your money, and my advice? Just stick to the salad bar and sandwich line. Those are the safe zones.

4. DO go to class.

This one seems pretty self-explanatory, but trust me, after getting up for an 8 a.m. class four days a week, you will become increasingly tired and that nap you could instead of going to class will become increasingly tempting. However, every time you miss even ONE class, you are wasting $70! As broke college kids, we cannot afford to throw away that kind of money every week or every month. So please, go to class and get the most out of your time at FC. Because you are only hurting yourself and your wallet if you don’t.

5. DO get study groups.

As “high school” as it sounds, study groups are a huge asset to you college. Not only will these help introduce you to new faces right off the bat, but they will also help you grasp the class content better and keep your grades up at the same time. How to do this? Simply ask people in your class if they would want to review the material in the library before the first big quiz. This will get the ball rolling and really help you break the ice with your new classmates.

6. DO use the library.

This one also seems a little strange. However, the library is a very important ingredient for keeping good grades. As you will see once you move in, residence houses are not the most study-friendly places on the planet. They are often bustling with people, music, and noise. If you attempt to study for a big test in a place like this, I can promise you that you will not be able to concentrate. There will be a friend distracting you the whole time, the smell of pizza making you hungry, or a cute boy stealing your attention. In the library, we have a silent floor (second floor), where no one can have their cell phones on “ring” and everyone must remain as quiet as possible. If you have a huge project to work on, or a big test to study for, I would make this your go-to place before you even think about studying in one of the residence hall lounges.

Follow these do’s/don’ts and your time here at Franklin College will no doubt be a success. I hope this helps!

Now that Halloween is over, it's time to focus on the Holiday Season. Don't get me wrong, I think Thanksgiving is great and can't wait for it, but nothing gives me greater joy than watching Freeform's 25 Days of Christmas, lighting peppermint scented candles, decking the halls, and baking gingerbread cookies. So while we approach the greatest time of the year, let's watch the 15 best Christmas movies of all time.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.
