When you groggily get dressed in the morning, exhausted from three hours of sleep (all thanks to studying for a calculus midterm), you’re thinking about what you’re going to eat for breakfast, praying one of your five classes gets cancelled or pondering whether you’re going to go out and party that night.
What never crosses your mind, is the fact that the color you choose to wear that day can not only affect people’s temporary perceptions of you but their mood as well. Each color of the rainbow can stand for different personality traits in a person, and believe it or not, make you feel different emotions. Who knew, right?
Red Hot: Bold. Powerful. Crazy. Red can demonstrate everything from the emotion of love and passion to intense anger and fury. Wear red to radiate confidence, attract your crush’s attention, or to make a bold statement. Switch up the shade to match your skin tone and personality with a girly and innocent pink, or a matured and classy burgundy. If you’re not quite ready to glam all out in red, start with slight red accents, like painted red nails, or bright red lipstick. Despite how you go about it, sporting red will make every head turn as you assuredly enter a room.
A Little Feeling of the Blues: Fail a test? Go through a rough break up? Throw on a blue sweater or slip on some turquoise jewelry. Blue is known as a sign of peace and tranquility, and can subconsciously uplift your mood, and relax you and the people that surround you. With its calming aura and soothing sensation, wear it on a first date to glow with composure and to ease the awkward tension, or on the first day of a new job, to demonstrate reliability, honor, and faithfulness.
Light, Bright & White: White is the hue of innocence, positivity and balance. You wear a stunning white dress to your wedding to demonstrate your birth into a new stage of your life and to demonstrate your virtues to your future husband. White also gives off feelings of having a clean appearance (assuming your white clothing is spotless). There is nothing more attractive than a guy who can pull off a white suit in the summertime. So take notes, boys.
Once in A While Mellow-Yellow: Yellow is the most intricate color of the rainbow to wear, as it carries multiple connotations and emotions. We all know it can stand for sunshine, which brings out all smiles, happiness, joy and fun. If you are active and lively, yellow is your color. However, ever wonder why yellow flowers are a staple at funerals? This hue can also come across as a sickly color, so next time you head to class with a deathly cold and constant cough, be sure not to dress yourself in it, so that maybe - just maybe - you’ll have a few people that don’t run and hide from you in fear. Illuminating your outfit in sporadic yellow accessories tends to be the best bet in order to prevent the appearance of a human banana.
Black, Black, Black: Classy, simple, sophisticated - the definition of black in three words. Whether it’s an elegant all-black outfit you wear out on a Friday night or a little LBD that every single woman owns one of (or ten), black is always the go-to regardless of the event, time of year or weather. As if this isn’t enough, black is a slimming color, and can make you appear five to ten pounds lighter than you normally look (what more could you ask for)? From limousines and black tie events to villains in scary movies to being the color of every girl’s beloved favorite pair of pants (yogas, duh), black is everything.
Red. Orange. Yellow. Green. Blue. Purple. Whether you realize it or not, each color of the rainbow exists for a reason. The next time you contemplate wearing an outfit to class, just imagine for a second what effect that will have on not only your mood that day, but on moods of the people that surround you. Crazy, right?
