Recently, everyone seems to be into new fitness trends and finding fun ways to work out. Zumba is one trend that has been around for years. My mom is a Zumba Fitness instructor, so naturally, this is my favorite way to work out. I always dreaded working out and hated the gym atmosphere. When I discovered Zumba, this all changed for me. Working out was no longer a dreaded activity because Zumba showed me a way to make it fun! Not only is it fun, but Zumba comes along with so many benefits that energize and affect your body.

Some of you may be asking, "What is Zumba?" Zumba is an upbeat group fitness class that uses different styles of dance to help melt away calories. It mixes high intensity and low intensity moves, which create an interval style workout. Classes are offered all around the world and are easy to find the US. Different classes are offered for different ages and skill levels, even kids! The music and dance moves change from time to time, which keeps your workout fresh and fun. Zumba allows you to dance away your calories without realizing you are working out.

Zumba advertises that they are a fun way to burn a lot of calories, and they truly stand up to this statement. Zumba has been shown to burn 650 or more calories in a one hour session for the average person! Obviously, this depends on many factors. Your weight, muscle content, fitness level, and amount of body fat play a large part in the amount of calories burned. The amount of effort you put into the workout plays a large part as well. So 650 calories is give or take, but if you give maximum effort in every workout, you will be burning a ton of calories.

In a Zumba class, you will meet and interact with many new and different people. Class sizes differ, but a typical class has ten or more people. Every class allows you to be surrounded by others who are there to have fun and stay active. The benefits of group workouts are extensive, but include accountability, exposure to a fun and social environment, a set workout schedule, and motivation. Being surrounded by others actually makes your workout more beneficial to you!

Going to a Zumba class greatly improves your mood. It is a great stress reliever because it allows you to relax. This exercise causes your body and brain to do a number of amazing things. The movement of your body can interrupt the thoughts that cause stress in the body, hence giving you a sense of calm. When exercising, the brain releases serotonin and dopamine, which improve focus and concentration. Perhaps the biggest mood benefit from Zumba is the brain releasing endorphins, which energize your body and make you feel happy. This is why no one leaves a Zumba class feeling sad. Not only is Zumba great for your body, but your mood too!

These are just a few of the great benefits that come from attending a Zumba class. Zumba is for everyone with every body type. Classes are offered for the elderly, children, babies, beginners, and experts. Even toning classes are offered if you want to work extra on your strength. There is no reason not to give it a try. If you haven't tried it yet, get out there and give it a chance! Go to zumba.com to find classes near you and get more information about the world of Zumba.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
