The A4 Waist Challenge is a newest fad that is "challenging" women to see if their waists are smaller than an 8.5" X 11" piece of computer paper. To see if you meet the requirements, you're supposed to hold a piece of printer paper up against your waist vertically and if you are smaller than those dimensions, then you can say you have a #A4Waist. According to the New York Times, this new trend swept social media networks in Beijing and has made it's way over to the United States.
When it comes to women in China, the smaller the better. Chinese women have been known to go to great extent in order to make different aspects of their bodies smaller and now in America, some women have become obsessed with being smaller as well.
This whole idea to be literally thinner than a piece of paper has become popular with girls in the U.S. Between wearing waist trainers and now this A4 Waist Challenge, women all over the world are under a constant pressure to be as thin as humanly possible.
Fortunately, the amount of negative responses in regards to this new trend pretty much outweighs the positive. A lot of people are quick to say that this new challenge is another unrealistic expectation of beauty for women. It is reassuring that despite all of these crazy and sometime dangerous trends that there are still people out there who won't fall for them.
Every body is a work of art and each individual is worth of a lot more than a piece of paper. Just because someone's physical appearance does not look the same as someone else's, does not lower the worth of anyone else. It's time we left the body shaming trends and challenges in the past.
